As many of the longtime posters, and some of the newer, know that my father has been ill for quite some time. He went back in the hospital on the 19th of December and is still there. We already knew about the severe emphysema, and what we had thought was a stroke for about a year.

While on this stay, they finally did an MRI and catscan as well as a full battery of tests. He is no longer able to eat solid foods or drink liquids. All food must go through a feeding tube through his nose. On Monday, the 29th, he will be having a peck tube put in to feed directly to his stomach.

On Saturday the 27th, we got all the results back from the specialists. He did not have a stroke as thought. He is in the far advanced stages of ALS {Lou Gherigs disease}. The special food to feed him is liqid form and is special order from the pharmacy. The cost is unreal. A 2-3 day supply{one case} is $80 dollars. For a one month supply the total reaches $1,000.00 bucks.

ALS is a fatal disease that attacks the nerves and muscles, causing them to steadily weaken over time. This has been a very trying Holiday Season, and quite possibly my last with him. I just wish it hadn't been spent in a damned hospital. /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif

$1000 a month that is outrageous!

Dude at least your able to be with him and let him know how you feel. /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif My dad had a stroke back in the 80s on 12/22 and died on new years day. all that time he was in a coma and i was not able to talk to him or rather him to me, you know say/hear those three words.
My prayers are with you and your family Ralph.

BTW I hate this time of the year everyone in my family Father, niece, uncles and cousins have all passed away in the month of December.

I am sorry to hear about that Ralph. About 10 years ago now my father had cancer in his neck and lost a few muscles in his neck and shoulder. On top of that they had to pull all of his teeth because it might have become gangrenous with the radiation therapy. He couldn't eat for a while as well and lost weight so they put a tube to his stomach and lived off EnSure calorie supplement. Bad time but he is now back healthy.
I always hate to hear things like this and think of all the people it affects. My thoughts go out to you.

Ralph,
I am very sorry and hope for the best for you and your family.

I recently lost a close relative (uncle) to ALS. Fortunately he was in good health other than this disease and as you know ALS does not affect ones mind at all. With ALS you are fully aware of what is going on around you so having family around is truly a blessing.

My prayers are with you

Although not the same (ALS) my father went through much of the the same and that type of feeding. It's so sad to see them in such bad shape and a helpless feeling. So sorry your father and your family has to endure these moments but stay strong for all. Best wishes Ralph, to you and yours.

I want to thank each and everyone of those who responded to this post. One can never have too many friends, and although distance can put limitations on a friendship, I don't feel it has affected many friendships here at CCB.

Bless you all for being so kind and understanding. From time to time we need friends for support and ther seems to be very much of that available here. Once again thank you to all of you, my friends.
