From time to time, somewhere on this earth, somebody is trying to get rid of a junker, and you can have it for free. But, remember, it will be junk. You will have to bear the expense of dismantling, transporting, and reassembling it. And, if it has a slate bed it will be heavy. The 3 pieces of slate in a 9" table will rock the scales at about 900 lbs. Smaller tables, without slate, have plywood beds, which in a giveaway will probably be warped. Or, maybe imitation slate (whatever that is), or aluminum honeycomb. The problem with cheap, lightweight tables is that they are unstable, and the slightest jar can send the balls flying. Good luck, but remember--you get what you pay for.

Few Things in Life are free. And those few free things, are not worth their cost.

Why invest time and effort in something that will more than likely cause you nothing but anguish. Save. And buy a table worth owning.

Talk to a realtor. My realtor once told me that she has 2-3 customers per year that need to unload a pool table and will give it away if someone will come and get it (of course when I was in the market for a table she didn't know of any available). It should cost between $400-$500 for a professional to break it down move it and re-assemble at your house.

Keep in mind, however, if you can get the slate cheap/free, and it's in good condition, you can build a body around it.

Of course, building a body will probably run around $1K, but you can work up to that.
