just bought a new cue... prepping the tip?

I literally bought a new cue and started playing with it, not realizing that the tip LOOKED good, but was perfectly smooth, didn't hold chalk well, and wasn't very rounded.

I noticed myself miscueing on a lot of shots where i tried to put any spin on the ball...


tonight i am getting some rough grit sandpaper and sanding the tip to become more rounded, and hoping the sandpaper will make the tip hold chalk well, good idea or bad?

Sandpaper is okay; just take it very, very easy with it. Spin the cue and stroke the sand paper toward the center of the tip. Don't over do it. Turn the cue upside down and tap the tip on to a hard floor just a little. Chalk and it's good to go.
