When assembling my new (used) oversized 8' table I noticed that the pockets were bigger then on my 7' Irving Kaye bar box. I would rather keep the pockets the same size.
Does doubling up on the facings affect play other then shrinking pocket size?

Yes. It can affect the way the ball bounces if it hits the end of the facing. They are hard, unlike the rail rubber. It makes pocketing balls harder. I think it makes the game better. My table has double shims now and I will add a third shim when I have it recovered, later this year.
