Nick, I never have seen Bootsy but he had a protege from Hamilton/Dayton named Roger Troutman. Roger and his brothers ("Roger and Zapp") had a big hit called "More Bounce to the Ounce" back around 1980.

Flash back to 1977. Here am I, heavy-metal freak type young man, walked into my favorite roadhouse The King of Clubs, halfway between Hamiltucky and Oxford, which attracted an eclectic mix of Miami Univ. students and farm boys, and who is playing but a band called Roger and the Human Body (predecessor to Roger and Zapp before they hooked up with Bootsy and broke out).

I have never heard such incredible tight funk before or since. They were amazing, even to a heavy-metal kid that I was.

Hard to believe he's only 51. Must have been a kid when he played behind James Brown.
