Imad grabs billiards crown

By Our Sports Reporter

MUSCAT — Imad Al Ghassani exhibited good form to beat Ibrahim Al Hassani and clinch the title of the Ramadan Billiard Tournament held at the Desert Breeze (Entertainment Games) Snooker & Billiard Centre in Al Khuwair, the largest recreation centre in the Sultanate.

The Ramadan Tournament was sponsored by Coca-Cola Products Company, Monalisa Oman and ‘Protects’ Hazar United LLC.

A total of 45 multinational players took part in the tournament, but reaching the final were two Omani cueists Ibrahim Al Hassani and Imad Al Ghassani.

The final, played to best of eleven frames proved exciting, as the more experienced Imad Al Ghassani raced through the first three frames in style.

However, Ibrahim Al Hassani played cautiously and safely to clinch the fourth frame.

The fifth frame proved to be neck and neck, when Ibrahim missed the black and Imad potted to enhance his lead.

However, the sixth and seventh frames, went in favour of Ibrahim, who was showing signs of a fightback.

But Imad used all his experience to play cautiously and his efficient and clever potting helped him win the eighth and ninth fames for an unbeatable lead.

With Imad clinching six frames, Ibrahim had no hope of winning the title in the eleven-frame competition final.

Prizes were given away by Said bin Mohammed bin Said Al Busaidi, the proprietor of the Desert Breeze Centre, Mustafa Gulam Ali, director Monalisa Oman, and Hassan of Protects Hazar United LLC.

The manager of the centre thanked all the sponsors and the players and assured that there will be monthly tournaments in the future.

My question is, why does the Coca-Cola Products Company find it acceptable to sponsor a billiards tournament in another country, but they do not sponsor pool tournaments in this country? /ccboard/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Contrary to popular opinion, a lot of players in this country are drinking Coke products, while playing pool.

Over on RSB, Deno Andrews posted a link to pics and info about a 3 Cushion Billiards tournament in Mexico City. The sponsors were: Corona Beer, Mercedes-Benz, Playboy, Elitte Tables (a new Mexican Billiard and Pool Table Manufacturer) and a large Mexican brandy distiller. There were a few other sponsors as well.

Perhaps we American pool players should let companies know that we would appreciate their sponsorship and would reward it by buying their products.

I agree we should let the companies know. But can you see an ad for Playboy on national TV during a mens tourney? I'd love it but don't think mainstream America will be amused.

DG - we should start a letter campaign to the big companies
