There's been some interest in a CCB chili cookoff (chili woofing thread link (http://www.billiardsdigest.com/ccboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=ccb&Number=183192))

To recap:

- Word gets out that Spiderman makes a pretty good bowl of chili

- As hard as it is to believe, New York City boy Eric challenges with his New York Strip Steak chili /ccboard/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

- Deeman counters with his Memphis Sweet Chili challenge. But then, much of Deeman's existence revolves around lusting for Memphis food. /ccboard/images/graemlins/blush.gif

- ras314 thinks we should try some New Mexico chili, and has offered to bring a batch called "warm"

- Wally alluded to bringing the Cincinnati Skyline Chili (well, at least they call it chili!) /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif

- Voodoo Daddy's even considering breaking his "No Texas" vow to enter his "Miami Multi-Cultural Half Dixie/Half Caribbean Chili" (<-- my money's on this one...)

- ryushen21 couldn't stand it any more, and was drawn into it with his challenge of special ingredient Mexican chili

- Feeling left out, 9 Ball Girl volunteers to enter New Yawk Canned Chili. Reminds me of a commercial "New York City??!?" /ccboard/images/graemlins/confused.gif

(We're still waiting for Rip to volunteer to bring the Viva Las Vegas Chili, Rod to bring the Arizona Saguaro Chili and Tom can bring the California Vegan Chili...)

Anyway, two things:

1) Who's up for a PettyPoint CCB Chili Cookoff and Pool Playing Weekend? Anyone interested that didn't respond to the first post?

2) When?

Here are the weekends put forth for your consideration (showing the Saturday dates):

> May 28 (Memorial Day weekend) - conflict: VNEA Vegas
> June 4 - conflicts: VNEA Vegas, JPNEWT
> June 11 - conflict: Florida Pro Tour
> June 25 - conflict: WPBA Seminole Hard Rock Casino, Hollywood, FL

I kinda lean toward Memorial Day, but really, any of these weekends work for me. If we can't do it one of these four weekends, we'll probably have to wait until fall.

And, we still need some judges... /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif Barbara, you still up for that? Anyone else?

I think this souds like an awesome idea. Chili and pool?!? (I'm ashamed I let myself miss this one...been out of the loop for a few months) You know...this would be the first CCB event that I actually may be able to attend. I'm just down in Mid/South central Louisianna. I'll volunteer to judge, if I can make it. BTW, memorial day would probably be best for me...don't know about anyone else.

Very tempting. Hot summer weekend in Dallas eating all the 'different' types of chili and playing pool with beer and tequila drinking Texans.

Explosive atmosphere to say the least. /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tom,

The Hubby goes deep-sea fishing while I'm at an event. Last year I took the US Open into my view. This year I could be in Texas instead of the Open only 'cause I'm a homebody and hate to be away from home when it's sailing time and there's some other event taking me away from home.

So how hot does it get in Terrell, Texas during the months mentioned? I can stand the chili, just not the outside heat.

And then there would be the nuts... /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Barbara... Cabo Wabo anyone...??? /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i brough a bottle of tequila that i would bet dollars to pesos is better than wabo. everyone who tried it liked it. and i'll be sure to bring at least one more bottle to chili cookoff.

on the non tequila related side, any of the dates will work, but the ones in the summer months work a little better for me. I talked to my friend in Mexico the other day and he said that this year's batch of "ingredient x" is looking good but won't be fully ready until around may/june. and for me there is no point in me making chili without my "ingredient x." but i would still totally be up for coming out to play and judge the chili cookoff. i really hope some of the out of town CCBers can make it to this. it would be nice to finally meet 'em and show them what "y'all" is all about.

SPetty,

Memorial day works for me. As you know, I have made labels for mine and Spiderman's entrys but might be willing to make a couple of more up for others.

Oh! There should be a mix of judges. We don't want all Texas taste buds to judge this puppy so it would be nice if Barb and others can make it. /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif (nuts on the side)

Let the cooking begin.... /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Barbara,

We recently caught on to a new invention, "air conditioning", and everyone is going nuts putting it in their cars, businesses, and homes. LeRoy has equipped Pettypoint with this new invention, just so we can play pool in comfort during the summer months!

Late June works best for me, because I normally visit my family back home on longer weekends like Memorial Day. But, if we can decide on it quickly, any date will work for me and I can make alternate plans for the next home visit.

Anyway, I need enough time to look for meat /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm up to the challenge. Hell, the best part about a Chili cookoff/tasting is that even if I lose, I still win. I love Chili (but losing isn't an option).

THE REST OF YOU GUYS ARE COMPETING FOR SECOND PLACE.

Very late June or after (except during the Open) will work for me. I don't mind the heat. I like it hot! I'm sure it's a different kind of heat than New York sans the humidity.

And please, please, PLEASE let me here that southern drawl! Something about that drawl...

Hmmmm...If it gets late enough in the year I might can get some fresh chili made up. I seem to recall it starts getting picked around July.

I'm having a bit of trouble with my chili cook, she wants to make the stuff so hot no normal human being could eat the stuff. Or maybe she's just out of the wimpy version. /ccboard/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My Dad lives above Angel Fire, north of Taos above the ski lifts and is the higest year round resident in NM. When he ventures forth from the mountain (only a couple of times a year), he picks up my chilis in the small mexican villiages you have there. As you say, you can get it hot enough to burn out the judges taste buds but that's a tad too warm for me.

Okee Dokee, then.

The official date for the first ever PettyPoint CCB Chili CookOff and Tamale Eating and Pool Playing weekend is:

June 25 and 26, 2005

If out of towners want to start making plans, my first inclination is to recommend flying in Friday afternoon/evening and flying out Sunday afternoon/evening. If you do that, and can kinda coordinate so that no one has to wait too long, I'd be happy to make an airport run to pick you up and drop you off to save you from having to rent a car.

There's plenty of room to stay at PettyPoint, but you'll be in a (very nice, if I might say so) big room with others (unless that scares everyone off, then you'll have the place to yourself!). I've got three queen size beds, one twin and two singles. If you don't care to stay here, I can get you local hotel info. I'd still be happy to pick you up and drop you off at the airport and ferry you back and forth to the hotel to save on a rent car. Of course, you can sleep out under the Texas stars if you bring your camping gear, but remember, the stars at night are big and bright!

WooHoo! Oh, sorry, am I sounding excited? This is gonna be fun! /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You've added beds in the penthouse? It certiantly is very nice. /ccboard/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hope nobody from my new stomping ground reads this, but I prefer Texas style chili to the NM type which is usually more of a sauce to pour over stuff. /ccboard/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think you have to grow up with the hot stuff so that your taste buds are completly destroyed before you can eat it. I ain't kidding, you need to wear gloves when handling the dried pods or your hands will get blistered. Lord help you if you make the mistake of rubbing your burning eyes. Not an ethinic comment so no reason for the overly sensitive to get bent out of shape.

Actually the large chili pepper farms in NM and AZ are fairly recent because it was just too damn hot to sell much anywhere else. Then newer milder varities were devoloped.

June 25/26 is now marked off in my crowded scedule. /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Deeman,

If your dad is buying chilis grown in small local type gardens he is probably getting the older and MUCH hotter chili peppers. My condolences to anyone who attempts to eat that stuff unwarned. I made up some elk sasuage by adding some ground up dried pods, wound up with about a teaspoon per 10 lbs of meat. And it still made my eyes water!

For the benefit of those who have not yet flown with cues: they need to be checked luggage, not carry-on. Use your regular cue case to prevent damage, and find a large suitcase in which the cue case will fit. I have a large wheeled suitcase that will just contain my 3x6 cue case, placed diagonally. Very little usable space is lost, I just pack my clothes around the cue case.

BUT <-- big BUT, make sure you require a signature so that they make sure to deliver it to a real person.

FedEx claimed one time that they left a package for me on my front porch at 10 p.m. Well, that's just a lie. They responded very poorly to my complaints - never once calling me back - but the package somehow was deposited just inside my gate a full week later.

UPS has been known to drop packages at the gate, even when the gate is open. Neighbor dogs piss on packages dropped by the gate. At least the UPS lady understood my problem when I explained it to her...

The problem will be in getting your cue back home. I don't know how to do that.

When we have a Chili Cook-Off here in Dixie...its normally a 3 day event with live music. The first year I went Garth Brooks was the headliner. Since then its been every country star from Brooks and Dunn to Gretchen Wilson. I wanna know who the headline act is gonna be at this shin-dig...AND dont tell me its Eric in a t-back or I'll spew coffee all over my work PC!! I will make some suggestions;

On the main stage Saturday will be:
Grand Funk Railroad
The Allman Brothers and the headliner
ZZ TOP

On the PPPH stage should be:
Joey Bonamassa
Derek Trucks then before ZZ Top comes on
Government Mule

This will create interest in the event and in '06 you can start charging admission at the gate and make $250K like we do down here!!!

Just some rambling thoughts from a crazy-man /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif Wish I could make it but I'm sure you'll do fine without me

Spetty -

I've found some flights but I need you to let me know when it's a good time to fly in on Friday and fly out on Sunday or Monday for your convenience. But let me know soon 'cause I found flights for 200 somewhat dollars and the later I wait, the more expensive it becomes. Am I a New Yawker or what?

I'm going to call nAzareth later to see if he can make it if it's okay with you.

I have one teeny problem. We both have the same beautiful Talisman case. I always check my cues in at the airport 'cause I have to. I've always used my Joe Porper travel bag but since I have this new case, I need the large size travel bag and I saw it in Valley Forge but when I placed my case against it, it didn't fit! Since I'll be at your place for just the weekend, I was just going to take my carryon case and eventhough I can fit my cues in there without a case, I don't think they would let me carry the case on to the airplane. Actually, carry on cases go in the belly of the plane with the other checked baggage just that with the carry ons you retrieve them immediately after you deplane and not at the conveyer belts where the checked baggage comes out of. I guess I could use my old cue case but I don't wanna.

hey,

if need be, i could pick up some people that are flying in on friday and shuttle then out to PettyPoint so as to reduce some of the driving for ya SPetty. Just an idea i thought i would run by you. I can fit 4 comfortably and 5 in a bit of a squeeze. Just let me know if you want my help.

Chances of getting "ingredient x" are looking very good but may require an extra trip on my own time. now just to start looking for my other ingredients and good pot to cook in.

oh yeah, with all these people, i'll bring at least two bottles of tequila.

My hope, though, is that those that are flying can arrange to arrive/depart within a few hours of each other so that I/we can make one trip to pick y'all up and no one will have to wait too long. I think Barbara said if she comes her flight will arrive around 3 p.m. I don't know how certain it is that she's coming, but 3 p.m.-ish sounds good to me. Of course, NBG gets special attention as she has always been there for all of us, but yes, I will make others a label as well. If you send me a graphic or have an idea of what you want. Ryushen21, now let me think, what would be a good theme for you?????

Remember, don't leave this entirely in my hands or you might be sorry. I had a friend yesterday who wanted an oil well based t-shirt that says "Oil Field Trash and Proud of it." I added an oil derrick gusher with the comment, "I got a little squirter!". He loved it. I think it may have went over his East Texas head.

NBG,

Actually, that's just my representation of a chalk outline of a body (my symbol for NY and Detroit). I had used it in my now famous Detroit "Murder City" t-shirt. That's the one with bullet holes that says, "Sorry we missed you! or did we?"

It just doesn't show as well on a small label format. The finished version will be clearer and not as fuzzy.

I'm not going to get into what's right and wrong with regards to beans in chili - it's like discussing politics! (And we don't do that at PettyPoint...)

Some folks like beans in their chili, and for them, I've talked LeRoy into making up a pot of beans so folks can add the beans to their chili if they prefer. That's actually the "right" way to put beans in chili if you must - make them separately and mix them when serving...

Tony Molasses asked me a question last night as my partner and I were spanking him and his partner in Scotch Doubles.... Will most bring their chili pre-cooked and ready to heat or will they "do it there"? My answer is that I will pre-cook mine the night before and bring it in a crock pot. Beale Street Chili has to simmer for a long time.

While SPetty has all the modern convienences, it would be a mess if someone was planning to do something from scratch. SPetty, of course, has the last word but maybe only someone travelling on a plane should have special consideration in this matter.

NOTE:

I'll have Spiderman's winning t-shirt for the last event (presented by Leroy, hey, he needs to do soemthing besides babaysit and coral chickens...) and I'll probably make up one for the cookoff winner with the map logo. This year ( /ccboard/images/graemlins/wink.gif ), I believe all the chili is pre-made and brought in, or ready for, crock pots. If you're driving in, I'll suggest that you bring your own crock pot. If you're flying in with chili, I can probably borrow a crock pot or two if needed. I think those flying in will have great success if they freeze their chili hard, then wrap it in several layers of newspapers and put it in a plastic bag in their suitcase. 9BG's, of course, is still in a can, so should be easy to transport! /ccboard/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Wally, hope that you are not going to attend the Pettypoint gala, and try to bring aboard an airplane, a recipe for that slop/gruel/etc, crap that they serve in Cinci, over spagetti noodles !!!!....and have the nerve to try to pass it off as Chile.....
With the new security, it'll be classified as a dangerous weapon, and you could end up detained, until they do check to see if the ingredients contstitute a health hazard.
Real chile, by the way, starts out as real SF sourdough starts out....using some of the old stuff, to get the right bacterium working....necessary for the real, authentic gastric delights, associated with this gormand's meal

BTW have you ever heard of Kentucky bologna? seriously. That's what they call it here anyway. it's the spicy reddish stuff. it's commonly cut thick and fried for a tasty sandwich. I think Fischer's meat out of L'ville invented it. not sure

Wally only 500 mi away? Wimpy. Heck I'll be driving 500 this weekend (round trip) just to get to a pool hall. /ccboard/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Checked the distance to Terrel, 883 mi. Think I may need to find some dry ice along the way. /ccboard/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Wally,

I checked out a 60 mile shorter route by going thru Roswell, but Streets & Trips claimes it takes 4 hrs longer. Wonder how long dry ice keeps chili, posole, and tamales froze. Least I won't starve if I break down out there in the staked plains. /ccboard/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Better fill up another ice box with beer though. /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorta thought cincy might be a bit over 500 mi. /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Interest rates are so low it doesn't matter that much anyway.
