"Lying awake
after billiards
(pocket billiards),
having lost,
having lost
I attempt again the "break";
I neither make,
nor see it made
(nor try)
but hear it,
clearly,
and lie entranced
as,
moving, coming
off the cushions,
ceaselessly,
uncontrollably,
never dropping,
the balls await,
in motion
some miracle of will."
From Robert Sward's poem Cyclades
after billiards
(pocket billiards),
having lost,
having lost
I attempt again the "break";
I neither make,
nor see it made
(nor try)
but hear it,
clearly,
and lie entranced
as,
moving, coming
off the cushions,
ceaselessly,
uncontrollably,
never dropping,
the balls await,
in motion
some miracle of will."
