REIGNING world pool champion Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan defeated ex-world titlist American Earl "The Pearl" Strickland, 15-10, to bag the $10,000 (about P540,000) champion's purse in the recent SML Entertainment 9-Ball Championship in Calgary, Canada, over the weekend.

Going to the championship round, the native of Cabagan, Isabela, and now residing in Toronto, Canada, disposed of Mike Yancowski, Eldon Gauthier, Mike Vidas, Craig Kerry, Fil-Canadian Edwin Montal and Danny Basavich.

Strickland forced Pagulayan in a rematch via an 11-3 victory over Brady Gollan in the one loss side.

Strickland settled for $6,000 in prize money. Tyler Edey earned $1,000 in bonus money for being the top finishing player from Calgary.

Billiard and Snooker Congress of the Philippines president Ernesto "Ernie" Fajardo lauded Pagulayan's triumph.

"It shows that we really have a good chance of winning in the SEA (Southeast Asian) Games," said Fajardo, noting the recent international victories of Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Gandy "Sapsal" Valle, Warren "Warrior" Kiamco and Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego.

Aristeo "Putch" G. Puyat, the acknowledged godfather of Philippine billiards, announced earlier that Pagulayan will carry the national flag in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games after the Bureau of Immigration approved the dual citizenship of Pagulayan, who grew up in Taguig City.

Reyes and Valle topped the first two legs of the SMB Asian 9-ball tour. Reyes, along with Kiamco and Gallego, also won in the 9-ball tournament in Japan. Bustamante topped the Bali, Indonesia, 9-ball tour.
