Tobacco Trial Sets Off Inquiry in Justice Dept.
By ERIC LICHTBLAU
WASHINGTON, June 13 - The Justice Department plans to investigate accusations from Democratic lawmakers that political interference prompted the department to slash by $120 billion its demands from the tobacco industry as part of a major civil racketeering trial, officials said Monday.

The internal investigation will be run by the Office of Professional Responsibility, which handles accusations of ethical improprieties and wrongdoing by department lawyers.

Several Democrats in Congress requested last week that the inspector general of the Justice Department open an investigation. The requests followed the surprise announcement by department lawyers at the close of a nine-month racketeering trial against the tobacco industry that they would be seeking $10 billion from the cigarette manufacturers to finance a stop-smoking program, rather than the $130 billion suggested by one of the government's own expert witnesses.

Senior Justice Department officials defended the decision, but it set off a storm of protest from Democrats, health advocates and others. The federal judge in Washington who is hearing the case, Gladys Kessler, said of the government's sudden change, "Perhaps it suggests that additional influences have been brought to bear on what the government's case is."

The judge[ probably a Liberal] is eluding to some kind of corruption or that the Gov ,[ that is duty bound, both legaly and morally to represent the best interests of the the people of the US], is actually working against them and is illegaly siding with the people they are supposed to be suing.[ ie, the tobacco companies].

The fact is , the Gov first tried for $230 billion in another case and lost. Now they tried for $130 billion and on the last day, they changed that to $10 billion. /ccboard/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Its coincidence.
That can be the only explination.
