Sometime around 500 BC, Confucious writing about man, placed the sage (shang jen) as the most elevated. The good man, who also possessed benevolent traits, is next on the list.
Good men (shan jen), he wrote, commonly labor in Government, for they do good deeds.
I guess times were a little different then.....no lobbyists to corrupt the good guys.
"after a state has been ruled by good men, it is possible to do away with cruelty and killing"
Then there is the gentleman (chun tzu) who knows what is right about profits, and is ready to lay down his life in the face of danger.
Finally there are small men (hiao jen)
Gentlemen possess a highly cultivated moral character; small men do not.
So we got it a little backwards, these days.
Confucious also wrote " politics is only an extension of a society's individual morals"
....and aren't we lucky to have such a moral man as our shan jen??
