For a pool table for someone who will enjoy playing now and again, and who is not a serious pool player at all, but who enjoys the game, if you had the choice, would you purchase a slightly used Harvard 8'with 3/4" 2-slate top, or would it be wiser to go for a slightly used Imperial Eliminator Non-Slate 7 ft. table? I've read all about the differences between slate and non-slate, etc., as well as the "buying a pool table" info on this site. So...I welcome any input, but please tell me why you'd choose one over the other. Thanks so much for your help.

I will choose a slate table over a non-slate table every time.

why don't you take this question upstairs to the pool section?
I'm sure you'll get some good answers to help you select.
While I wouldn't buy a table without a slate bed.....I'd like to see 1 inch slate, instead of 3/4.
There is so much more to know....before you decide.....is the table sold wood, or particle board? are there strongbacks underneath for support?
And how good are the cushions?....there are some cheap ones out there, that don't play well.
Have someone familiar with table construction, look it over for you.
And what kind of service/support will you get from the dealor?
