What is the minimum outer table width of 8' and 9 foot tables?

A 9' table is commonly referred to as 4.5 x 9, which implies 54 x 108....but if the playing area is 50 x 100 and one allows 4" all around for the frame, the outer dimension would be 58 x 108, ie 4 inches wider than the advertised 4.5 feet width of 54". So are 9 foot tables at least 58" wide?

An 8' table is commonly referred to as 4 x 8, which implies 48 x 96....but if the playing area is 44 x 88 and one allows 4" all around for the frame, the outer dimension would be 52 x 96, ie 4 inches wider than the advertised 4 foot width of 48". So are 8 foot tables at least 52" wide?

It's a 9' table, and there's not much on the table that is 9'. In fact, the oddity is that the width of the cloth (including the rubber cushions) is very close to 4.5' for this size table. So, you might want to call it a 4.5' table instead.

A rail including the cushions can be anywhere from 4" to 10" wide, I suppose. 6" is always a good number (2" for cushion, 4" for exposed wood rail). So, for 6" rails, the outside width would be about 62" (5' 2")

Standard playfields are:
7' 39x78
7' Brunswick 38x76
7' older barboxes 40x80

8' 44x88
pro 8' 46x92
9' 50x100
10' 56x112

Then you add twice the rail width.(tip of cushion to outer most part of rail) generally 9-1/2" total.

Most tables nowadays are coming with wider rails and diamond sights(aka cavalier rails) which bring the amount to add to 11".

Then, you've got commercial tables (Diamonds, Crowns, etc.) that are even wider - 7" to 9"

Of course the newer Brunswicks are all over the place. Their Manhattan, for intstance, has a 9-1/4" rail, so you would add 18-1/2" to the playfield.

So, back to your question, the MINIMUM outer table width of 8' and 9' tables is 54" and 60" respectively.

I have a 9' Olhausen Huntington on order. The playing surface is 50x100 as you say, but I called to ask what the actual dimensions are: they're 61" x 111" - an inch wider than 5' and 3 inches longer than 9'.
