Official in southern Somali town threatens beheadings for not praying 5 times a day

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Residents of a southern Somalia town who do not pray five times a day will be beheaded, an Islamic courts official said Wednesday, adding the edict will be implemented in three days.

Public places such as shops and tea houses in Bulo Burto, about 124 miles northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, should be closed during prayer time and no one should be on the streets, said Sheik Hussein Barre Rage, the chairman of the town's Islamic court.

Those who do not follow this edict “will definitely be beheaded according to Islamic law,” Rage told The Associated Press by phone. “As Muslims, we should practice Islam fully, not in part, and that is what our religion enjoins us to do.”

He said that the courts are announcing the edict over loudspeakers in the town.

The decision is not binding on courts in other towns.

Somalia's Islamic courts have made varying interpretations of Quranic law, some applying a more strict and radical version of Islamic law than others.

As a result of such disparate variations, residents in the capital of Mogadishu complained, forcing the Council of Islamic Courts officials in October to set up an appeals court with better-educated judges.

The Council of Islamic Courts have swept through most of southern Somalia since taking over Mogadishu in June.

Their sometimes strict and often severe interpretation of Islam has raised the specter of Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime, and contrasts with the moderate Islam that has dominated Somali culture for centuries.

Some of the courts have introduced public executions, floggings of convicts, bans on women swimming at Mogadishu's public beaches, and the sale and chewing of khat, a leafy stimulant consumed across the Horn of Africa and in the Middle East.

These are the people that some would have us try to reason with, develop a better understanding, open lines of communication?????????????
Are these the same people Rosie O'D says are just like us...mothers and fathers?????????????????
There is a reason conventional wisdom doesn't work when dealing with barbarians! They are not just like us!!!

In a way, you're right, Steve, but it isn't the radicals in the Muslim religion that we need to appeal to, it is their moderate leaders, those Muslims who do not subscribe to the radical muslim ideal. How else shall we deal with the problem? Obviously, going to war with them isn't reasonable. It would seem, particularly at this point, that only through communication, and dilomacy, IOW, appealing to the more reasonable element of the Muslim population, to reign in those who are convoluting the modern interpretations of Muslim ideology, which do not subscribe to the radical interpretations, is our only hope. We can't, after all, go out and kill over a billion muslims, nor do we have the time, or the money, to try to "Spread Democracy and freedom in the Middle East" which wouldn't reign in the radicals, anyway, ever if there were time.

War, torture, and regime change through occupation, accomplishes absolutely nothing, to quell the radical muslims. There are too many of them, located in too many regions. Diplomacy and reason may be successful. War certainly isn't.

While much of what you say has merit, the moderate Muslims have absolutely not power in the places where these radicals have power. They are as much an enemy to the fundamentalists as we are and will be eliminated when they try to stand for moderation.

Well, maybe, we should just step back, and let the good times roll???

A War in Iraq, sure isn't doing the trick, IMO. We can't go out a kill over a billion Muslims. What's the answer? I don't see any other option, than working to change their point of view. Bush's plan, obviously only made everything worse, that's for sure.

Based on this thread, you may be right. Leave them alone and let them kill off their own.

As for your other post...I agree that it is the radical group that are doing this. The problem is the moderates won't stand up against them. There is no outcry from the moderates against this action. If they won't stand up against the radicals, and the moderate muslims won't stand up against them, they are pretty much free to do what they want.

I agree completely. I wish I could remember the documentary I saw, where a Muslim Iraqi wife, now we think of the women as being submissive, right, but she was railing and yelling at her husband, putting him down because he didn't answer the call, and join with the American Troops, to fight off the first signs of terrorists infiltrating Iraq. In my mind those Iraqi men don't exactly remind me of brave warriors! The tactics over there, anyway, among all of them, are the tactics of cowards. IMO, that is what we should be putting out there about terrorists, in general...it's the only kind of tough talk that would do any good...

"OK, you guys want a fight, stop being cowards, put on a damn uniform, and stop hiding behind your cowardly hoods, like a bunch of women, and we'll give your a$$es a fight you'll never forget!

There should be, IMO, closings of all mosques, in all countries, until this religious faction's main leaders join together, get off their collective a$$, and addresses their own mentally unbalanced fanatical element. The world, needs to hold this bunch of religious fanatics to the wall, and if their moderate leaders won't step up to the plate, in the name of mankind, and wage an intellectual war against their own, then they, the moderates, should bear some punishment, for allowing such hatred to grow within their own followers. The only war that should be raging, is Muslim against Muslim, IMO.

Gayle in Md. Close the Mosques, until they take responsibility for the hatred their growing inside them. We've been nice with them far too long, IMO.
