My mom wants to buy a table (for aesthetics as well as playability) and I really don't have time to help her out right now (nor am I really knowledgable enough). Could someone recommend a website (or two) that she could go to to outline the basics of what she needs to look for depending on her wants/needs? Thanks.

Huge question.

Major and minor manufactuers have websites: AMF, Brunswick, Conelly, Diamond, Valley, Olhausen. (Sometimes the Mfr's site stresses features they excell at, but are not necessarily that good, like: "You MUST have a 3-pc slate" (not necessarily so)).

First, figure out your size and budget contraints. That will limit your choices and simplify your search. A 9ft table requires a 15x20 room, a 7ft table requires 14x17 room, with no room for much else.

If the budget is less than $500, your are probably looking at a fiberboard table available at Wal-mart, Sams or Sears, or, if less than $1k, a used slate table. Wood fiber tables weigh 200-300 lbs; slate tables weigh 800-1500 lbs and up. Weight is only an issue for the house; you won't want to move your table (often).

What's your size, budget, weight limit, interest level?

Good luck.
