the olhausen table i am soon to get has italian slate.. would that be considered below average, average, or above average?

This is not an argument, but an open question:
What attributes make one slate "better" than the rest? What are the desired values for hardness, elasticity, thermal expansion and moisture retention? If a new slate deposit was discovered tomorrow, how would we know if it is even better than Italian?
Assuming we can quantify these attributes, we should be demanding test data on the slates that come with our tables. (But we don't. We simply swallow the marketing BS that the XYZ mfr is using the finest ABC slate, etc....)
The point is, if we could decide upon numerical performance specifications, it would not matter if new slate was discovered in Possum Trot, AR (that's a real place), or if a new material could be manufactured that replaces slate.
