My prediction for this upcoming year, Allison and Karen will not dominate like years past. Too much young up coming talent out there, that's good for the sport.
Its good to seen the TX Tornado still a tough turtle to drown, and gotta wonder who will be the youngest to get in the top for of a WPBA event or win it in 07 besides Jasmin.
Can Allison and Karen take it up another notch we'll see. My thoughts, their european style of play is not agressive enough to totally dominate anymore in 9-ball.

My prediction is that you will continue to see the same as you have in the past. Every year there are new up and coming stars, and every year Allison and Karen are on top. There are always those ones that win one here and there, but I don't see the top two doing anything differently.

You may be right. /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The first tournament of 2007 was last week. Karen Corr finished 5/8 and Allison Fisher finished 3/4. Two of the young Asian players Ga Young Kim and Xiating Pan, went to the finals. Off the top of my head, I can't remember the last time there has been a final without either Karen or Allison. It may not have been too long ago, but I'm sure it doesn't happen too often.

There are also a few other players knocking on the door of the top level. I know a number of players and fans are just waiting for Monica Webb to break through and win a tournament.

I think this competition from the younger players is great for the WPBA and I look forward to the day when a dozen or more players are considered serious contenders to win any tournament.

I don't personally think that their new formaty is fair. When they get down to the final 8 on the winners side and final 8 on the losers side they reset the field giving the people on the winners side only 1 chance. If it is suppose to be double elimination then it should be double for all. The way it is set up now the only one's getting the double chance are the one's on the losers side. Say Allison and Karen plus 6 other ladies are on the winners side. they have to join the 8 from the losers side in what is now single elimination... they don't get a 2nd bite of the apple... i think they only did this to give the lesser players a chance to cash higher.....jmho....but what do i know....nothing.................mike

Mike, I really don't like the new format, but I don't think it detracts from the wealth of talented, young, players in the WPBA. They all have to live with the format and if a lesser player gets to the final 16, on the winners side, they also have to deal with the single elimination. /ccboard/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That being said, I haven't heard that any of the top players were against the format.

Nationals, Nov 05, Allison 4th; Karen 6th.

Of course the new format makes it harder for the top pros. One bad match and they are gone; One great match for an inferior player and they stay.

Of course it may be by design to get fresh faces on TV.

Now that the IPT is gone there is no attraction for people to follow the men and it now looks like no one is bothering to follow the women either.

Not too many people around here even knew that the women were playing their tournament.

I imagine the next move for the women would be a return to double elimination with a blind draw. I would suspect that Karen and Allison would rather take a chance on facing each other in round 1 rather than finding themselves in single elimination final 16 tournament.

I wonder what the women playing in the WPBA think of the new format?

Hi Slim. By 'European style', do you mean snooker style? Because Both Gerda and Helena are European and have very aggressive styles, but they don't have snooker backgrounds.

I think that's a very interesting observation you made there. I've always felt that if a really talented fast and loose player were to come along, she could give them a real run for their money. I think Kim is the one to watch. She is incredibly talented and hard working---a lethal combination. She could very well be the female Efren.

Jasmin and Pan are also contenders. I think they are going to be on top fighting for the hot seat frequently in the future.

One thing, though, you never see Alison have two low finishes in a row. That shows how tough she still is. She simply won't allow it. Karen is the same way. She won't go down without a fight. It should be an interesting year.

Yes I do mean the snooker style. Playing all games except 9-ball they are the best in the world. To play 9-ball at the highest level you need more stroke.
One of the best male players in the past that had a regimented style in male players was Jeff Carter, a great player, but he could not ever play like Bustamante in stroke or Earl in stroke in 9-ball. I have always liked Vivian's style because it was well suited for 9-ball. Janette in stroke is also an intimidating game. Balukus also had a very big swing with a powerful offense. This also is a reason that I said before, extremely tight pockets in 9-ball hurt the game, because it will not allow the players to start free wheeling, smooth out, and fall in dead punch, perfect speed control with effortless runouts. I have always enjoyed seeing women who play 9-ball in an agressive attacking way, we are starting to see that more and more, only then will we see women dominate some of the top male players in the world, but it will happen. This is not golf, and because of that it gives our game something special. I just wish Allison would of played and beat Sigel, that alone could of been the next Color of Money for the billiard world.

Fran, do you happen to know if Jasmin plans to come to this country and play in the WPBA on a regular basis?
Of course, I know she would have to qualify first, but that is a given and I don't think it will take her too long to earn her pro points.

Thanks Fran.
Coming here to play doesn't seem to be a high point on her list of things to do.
I was just wondering if you had some insider information.

If Jasmin changes her mind about staying in Europe to play against the men, and targets the American scene instead, it's going to be a whole new ball game here, IMO. IIRC, it was stated by Mitch, in Vegas, that she prefers shooting against the men in Europe. She has tremendous mental composure, along with a powerful break, and top notch fundamentals. I don't see the occasional mental lapses in her game that seem to show up in Kim's game. Jasmin displays a lot of maturity and confidence, much like Allison and Karen. I really wish the WPBA would sell Cd's of the entire year, annually, with the complete matches from quarter finals to the championship match, or even earlier in the competition. Can't imagine why they don't do that. I'd be first in line to buy one!

Just my 2 c.

I honestly have to say that I have never been impressed with the photos on the WPBA web site. I am not, and never have been, a portrait photographer, but I think they could do better at Sears. I also think the tournament photographs are not up to the quality expected from a top notch organization. /ccboard/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The only thing that's going to beat Allison Fisher is if Allison loses her drive to be the best. Aggression doesn't win 9-ball tournaments, perfect placement does and no one does that like Allison, God love her. Sure, playing fast and loose might work for a while because 9-ball has a luck factor like any other billiards game, but in the long run it won't hold up. (All right, I admit it. I have a secret crush on Allison Fisher.)

Who are the top WPBA players who play "fast and loose"? I know Pan does not and suspect that Kim doesn't either.

Are there WPBA players in this category?

I don't know about "loose", but a number of WPBA players play fast.
Vivian V. certainly doesn't drag her heals and neither does Jeanette Lee. However, I would have to give the speed award to Ga Young Kim. Once, at a regional tournament, a friend put a clock on her as she broke and ran a rack of 9-ball. The total time was 58 seconds. Is that fast enough for you? /ccboard/images/graemlins/blush.gif

So what are the changes that the WPBA has in mind?

Why didn't they implement them before the season started?

Hey Jake,

They play scared? That's if they play? More excitement at Hunter Classic Women's Tour event at Shooters II in Lake Jackson, Tx. Last I heard Lisa Brannen and Leslie Ann Rogers
were playing each other in the semi final winner side match.
Some of my favorite players don't even play the WPBA Tour much any longer.

They also play in locations miles from the nearest airport, they play in mangy casinos most of which have no hotels and are miles from any nice large city, they wonder why they have such small crowds? You can't call "casion pool" a family experience. In Vegas you have to trip over the bums and panhandlers. /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, what changes are they making? Are they making any changes to there locations? The most beautiful place they play is near Miami but that is in July. /ccboard/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I was hoping the changes might be in their location and venue? But the season is set! They are even playing in Hole In The Wall Oklahoma (NORMAN). /ccboard/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Well, no place worth traveling to. At least the Texas Tornado Event I attended was in San Antonio!

Play it cool Jake! /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hello Carol,

I hope you are well? I am just fine thank you! Hey, you are one of the ladies I miss seeing and reading in the WPBA headlines. /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Only two casinos I liked, Sam's and The Tribe's place near Miami. When I travel to Memphis and Miami at least I am going somewhere! (A short Limo or Rent-A-Car ride to and from the Airport) Ya understand I hope! Example: Michigan City Indiana is almost a 100 miles from O'hare and Chicago.

I seems to me the WPBA Tour locations are like the pool magazines getting more minuscule as time goes on. The first one was the best one Valley Forge 2001. But for me no pro women at Valley Forge, no Harry at Valley Forge.

March madness is upon me and season tickets for baseball. Hey, pool has to take a back seat. Miss ya!

Stay Well, /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif
