Leahy: Cheney Told GOP-Led Congress It Was ‘Not Allowed To Issue Subpoenas’

Today in a press briefing, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) revealed that the White House had missed its 2:30 PM deadline to turn over documents to the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding legal justifications for the National Security Agency’s eavesdropping program. The Committee had already pushed back the original July 18 deadline twice after the White House requested more time.

Leahy said that the administration’s stonewalling amounted to “contempt of the valid order of the Congress,” and pointed out that these subpoenas were passed by broad bipartisan votes. In fact, the Senate Judiciary Committee in the conservative-led 109th Congress, chaired by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) also attempted to ask questions about the program’s legal justifications. But Vice President Cheney personally barred him from issuing subpoenas:

In fact, we were about to issue subpoenas then and one of the senators came to our meeting and said that the vice president had met with the Republican senators and told them they were not allowed to issue subpoenas.

Not quite sure that’s my understanding of the separation of powers, but it seemed to work at that time.

Leahy also said that while he didn’t receive the requested documents, he did receive “a letter this morning from the Office of the Vice President identifying some documents that would be responsive to the committee’s subpoena.” In the letter, the administration claims the Office of the Vice President is not part of the Executive Office of the President.

Leahy responds, “Well, that’s wrong. … [O]h, incidentally, at least this morning, as I left Vermont, I checked the White House Web site. And even their own Web site, this morning, at least, says that the Executive Office — that the vice president is part of the Executive Office of the President.”

This borders on the absurd. The office of the Vice President is now a separate branch of government, immune to investigation...
And, unless theft, corruption, abuse of power, and other high crimes committed by these people...falls under "Homeland Security" it's hard to believe they are trying to pull this off.
Even harder to believe, that people still believe in them..
What's Dick worried about anyway? They have the only joker in the deck, the "right bower"...the Presidential pardon card.
I predict that GWB will issue a blanket pardon for his entire cabinet and aides, before his "reign" ends.
I'm not sure which mark set by this admin will ever be broken...the totality of theft and corruption...or the incompetence of many of the appointees...to offices for which they were totally unqualified for. (including the oval office)

This bunch has refused to answer questions throughout, and even before they got in there, illegally. They spent billions investigating Clinton's penis, but refused to answer reasonable questions about their own businesses, drug useage, alcohol problems, don't forget, Bush lied about his drunk driving record.

All you need do is study the shady pasts of Bush, Cheney, Rice Rumsfeld, it's all there. They're nothing but punk crooks, with no saving grace, and no conscience. Starr spend billions investigating the Clintons, and all he could come up with was a BJ. The subject of the investigations had nothing to do with national security, or the country, in the first place. but, Cheney, gets a bye after doing business illegally with Iraq, for ten years? Bush gets a bye after bilking the citizens of Texas with his stadium deal, and dumping stocks, and snorting cocaine, driving around drunk, and being bailed out by Da Da throughout his entire adult life?

How the hell do people who voted for George Bush, have the nerve to even utter the name, Clinton? If the right wing corporate fascists hadn't bought the press, (Thank You Ronald Reagan For Removing All safegaurds and clearing the way for that event!)Bush could never have pulled it off. He was re-elected with the smallest margin ever recorded for a sitting president, and then acted like he had won a huge mandate. Everything they do is a farce! both elections were corrupted, and Rove laid the plans. Fox news reported Gore the winner early, and his voters went home. Ohio, in the last election, same rovarian style shenanigans. These people are nothing but crooks.

A vote For Republicans, is a Vote For Fascism. /ccboard/images/graemlins/frown.gif
