LAKELAND, Fla. - A 70-year-old man has been charged with grand theft after police watched him siphon off more than 900 gallons of gasoline from underground storage tanks at two gas stations, the Polk County authorities said Wednesday.

Deputies witnessed Hobert Gibson steal gasoline from two stations Tuesday, but sheriff officials believe he did this on a daily basis since at least January. The two gas stations he hit that day were about 40 miles from his Winter Haven home, and police believe it was typical for Gibson to visit a few stations per day across a wide geographical area. He is believed to have sold the stolen gasoline, which he stored at his towing company.

Gibson outfitted a stolen box trailer with tanks able to hold 3,250 gallons and with a trap door underneath, police said. He would pull over near the underground storage tank at a gas station, pop the trailer's hood and pretend to fix a problem, as the trap door obscured the view of gas being pumped into the tanks.

Once Gibson even chatted with a Florida Highway Patrol officer while on one of his missions, he told investigators after his arrest, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said.

"It was broad daylight, nobody knew that's what he was doing," Rodgers said. "He was that good at it."

Gibson was being held without bond at Hernando County jail because he faces theft charges in multiple counties. It was not known if he had an attorney.

See, he really knows how to supplement that small social security check. If this was California and the guy was a bit younger, I'd have thought....Wolfdancer /ccboard/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Except Wolfie's in Washington now and I don't think he's seen 70 for at least a decade... /ccboard/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I guess that is one good thing about getting old, nobody expects an old geezer to be up to no good.

Man, that's hitting below the belt, even for a conservative from the deep South.
That sounds like too much manual labor for me....I'm working on some other schemes as we speak.

I'm keeping score Bill...and that's one for your side.
Hey , this partner's league ...we play out of the Cad...now the Island....this is really a lot of fun. Three sets of partners on a team....a scotch doubles format. We have a couple of good young players, one is extremely good, a father and son combo, a lady that plays with her husband in Master's events....and to show they ain't ageist....me.
I hope when you get my age, you can still figure out which end of the cue to chalk.....I might come over there to your farm and run a 147 on you out in the barn....

My biggest surprise is that you have not killed bsmurtz over his answer.... /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've got my good eye on you. If enriched E-85 starts showing up in Iran, I'll out you.

You gotta love this guy's cutting out the middleman theory anyway.

Thankfully, he can't remember how to get to my house (Alzheimer's). Sounds like a fun league, Jack. Glad you're enjoying it. I think I'm going to have to find a league that plays on big tables. I have a tough time transitioning from the 10' table to the 7' table. Really messes up my position routes. I hear the BCA has a league playing out of Classic Billiards on 122nd in Portland. Are all of your teams playing out of Island or just one?

That's our sponsor ...so every other week at home....and I try to get sick on the off weeks...but did have a good time at another bar last night. Up here, most folks are pretty good sportsmen. We congratulate an opposing player on a nice shot, good run out, etc...if you can play decent yourself, you can appreciate the other guy's game...it's the ones that can't play, that see fouls where there isn't any, claim they
never foul, etc.
I was involved in something weird last night..It's the first shot after the break, and the guy calls a striped ball, but hits a solid first...thinking it was a foul, I pick up the cue ball and now they call a foul on me....and it was...except that I also didn't notice...nothing went to a rail...so I end up with bih, after screwing things up to begin with.
