There are hundreds of books on billiards which are out of print. Many from the 1800's and 1900's can be found for sale at used.addall.com

Search for keyword billiards. Prices currently range from $1.00 to $4500.00

Some of these books are quite interesting and can teach a pool player a few tricks which now seem to be closely held secrets!

I've been collecting billiards related books (as well as others) for quite some time.

One item I have is "Acts and Laws - Connecticut - An Act against Gaming" from 1786 which was a law passed in Connecticut making billiards illegal!

Other interesting books I have are...

"Captain Crawley's Handy Book Of Games For Gentlemen" 1860 (I have yet to meet any "gentlemen" playing pool! /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

"Croquet: The Laws and Regulations of the Game, Thoroughly Revised" 1864 (Interesting how this is similar to early billiards rules!)

"Dainty Billiards" 1925 (Very good for safety play although this was not the intention of the book.)

"How to Hustle Your Friends at Pool" 1980 (Great for the bar games!)

"Pool Cues, Beer Bottles, and Baseball Bats" 1990 (Self defense for when you hustle people in bars... /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

"Racking Secrets" (Read a rack!)

"Hoyle's Games Improved" 1778 (One of the first books with rules for billiards. In addition to the origional, I also have a reprint of this book from King's Arms Press - N.J. - 2005 )

"Sun Tzu: Manual for War" (Great lessons for strategy! - Not billiard specific.)

"Tavern 8 Ball for Fun and Profit" 1978 (The title says it all!)

"The Hustler's Handbook: How to Play Pool for Fun and Profit" 1993

"The Theory and Practice of Gamesmanship" 1947 (Not pool specific, but on how to psych out your opponent!)

I'm surprised you included these two, since they don't relate well to games on cloth. I hope no one buys them hoping to learn how to draw the ball.

I also collect billiard books and would be interested in trading with anyone who has unusual items. My duplicates (about 490 current items plus 90 already traded) are listed at: http://www.sfbilliards.com/books_to_trade.htm

Dang, that's a heckuva list! I was going to mention that it's probably not 1/10 of Jewett's collection...

I'd be impressed if you've read them all!

I have two slightly different copies of Stoddard. A typical eBay price is $150. I think it is much better than Hemming, but I don't recall anything in it that is not covered by more recent authors.

Hemming is available as an on-demand reprint for about $30. For the same price or less you could get a brand new English translation of Coriolis.

Western costs about $100. There is much that he says that turns out to be wrong. I think the Pointer may actually work correctly, but he didn't understand why.

Locock got a lot of things right that later authors got wrong. Well written.

Well actually I go to used book stores and look for anything billiards related just for collecting.

So far as what I read and pay attention to (and share with others for learning), it is pretty much the Jimmy Reid videos I have, Dr. Dave's DVD, 99 critical shots, Billiard Sanctuary Academy of the Cueing Arts videos, last part of The Black Widow's Guide to Killer Pool by Jeanette Lee and the hustling videos/books for fun.

Then books on specific things like racking, 8-ball, etc. are really great. An entire book on one subject!

Other than that, any beginner book on pool. They all pretty much cover the same things.

I feel I have learned the most from the internet and practice, practice, practice.

I have not read all the books I have, but have read many of them.

Billy, I've been looking for a copy of "Come Let us To billiards, away"...ever since I loaded mine out, and didn't get it back.
I remember Jack White writing that he was giving up touring and had a young guy that was going to take over the tour....
wonder what happened to that young guy...probably working as a Wal-Mart greeter somewhere

I considered buying them at one time...but decided I'd be disappointed???? <hr /></blockquote>I wouldn't buy any of them on principle - that guy's a sleaze bag of the lowest proportions. That's the guy that continues to use Landon Shuffet's name and persona as his own - he's taken over landonshuffet.com as though it is Landon's site - but it's really him just to hawk his wares. He's continued to use Landon even though the family would prefer that he sever the relationship. And he's been on this board before and is a real dick. (Sorry ####!)

Yeah, I read about the rift between him and Stan, Landon's Dad, and a former Academy instructor.

<blockquote><font class="small">Quote wolfdancer:</font><hr> Billy, what do you think about the Academy of Billiards videos?...<hr /></blockquote>

I think the first two videos in the foundation series are the absolute best I have seen for stroke. They discuss stroke in extreme detail. Just like how books on one specific billiard subject are great.

And I could care less "who" produces a video, book, post on the internet, etc. What matters to me is if the information is helpful to my game or not. For example Fast Larry posted something once about Jimmy Reid being the best. Well I checked it out and found his videos to be some of the most helpful to my game I have seen.

So for learning, good to have an open mind.
