The Old Testament talks of a coming messiah.
They expected a warrior-king, Hercules, Conan, somebody to
kick their oppressors' arse. They never dreamed they would get this peacenik, telling them to turn the other cheek, raising hell with the
Pharisees & Sadducees. Wonder why they would dream him up?
The New Testament tells us that Jesus told them to go out and
spread the good news. So this motley crew of losers went out and put their life on the line, most of them losing it.
Most scholars have ample proof of Paul's existence. And he knew
Peter, didn't get along with him much.
The movement continued to grow despite every attempt to
destroy it. Score at halftime; Lions 10, Christians 0.
I'm not wanting to start a philosophical debate. Just point out
the fact that something very odd happened 2000 years ago that
has perservered.
Merry Christmas, everybody.

If Paul hadn't persisted
Christianity never,
would have existed.

Saw this cute but obviously dated parody earlier today - seems to match your description fairly well.

What if Bush had run against Jesus in 2004? Might a typical Bush ad looked something like this?

Yes, but he did. A simple twist of fate that turns
Christian persecutor into Christian propagandist?
Perhaps.

Very good. I posted a similar thread on AZ or perhaps here
once to show why Jesus wouldn't have a chance in a PRES.
election.

Harry, when you start to really analyze why people are agnostic or atheist, you will find that somewhere in their life, they became disgusted, not with a higher source,
but with organized religion.
The Popes, priests, preachers, televangelists, Bible
thumpers, snobs, hypocrites have turned people away from God. And I certainly can see why.

Very true. I've never seen God himself:
demand money from people that they don't have,
turn up His nose,
molest little children,
kill for power.
WE drive believers & potential believers away.

God has never been the problem. It is us! Always has been and always will be.
