View Full Version : Pool....the Devil's Game

"The devil he baited a trap,
With billiard balls and a cue;
And he chose as marker,
An imp much darker
Than all the rest in hue.
And he put on his Sunday clothes,
And he played with saint and with sinner;
For he'd found out a way
To make the thing pay,
And when losing he still was the winner."

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be pool players....

Trouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in River City!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "P"
And that stands for Pool,
That stands for pool.
We've surely got trouble!
Right here in River City,
Right here!
Gotta figger out a way
To keep the young ones moral after school!
Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...

It might be interesting to note that in the introductory text you referenced, billiards must be held in low regard if two countries have laid claim to not having founded the sport/game. /ccboard/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sorry Dr. Wolfie, but I got you beat too. See my August '04 article (http://billiards.colostate.edu/bd_articles/2004/aug04.pdf).

That you did. And I like Dr Dave's article too. Nicely written.

It is good to keep things in perspective.

666 (At least that is what my wife's family thought I had behind my ear when they found that what I "believe" is bigger than Christianity /ccboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif )

Well, you got me...but .........why settle for just lyrics?
(Is that Ronnie Allen, or Buddy Hackett?)

Now that is interesting and I'm curious, but guess that is something for the NPR side. Not sure you want to travel over there.....you might have to come out of retirement, and at the very least you would want to study the group and write a book about dysfunctional personalities and their inter-relationships (and in some cases intra-relationships). /ccboard/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Buddy Hackett (http://imdb.com/title/tt0056262/) , thanks for the link. That was great.

Just to be clear, I am expressing absolutely no religious views by asking this. I just wanted to know what you meant.

Thanks,
Dave (he who will not debate religion, except privately with very close friends)

Oneupmanship?????
Here's a photo from the Masonic Lodge Billiard room in SF. The tables are from 1915, and "pockets...we don't need no stinking pockets".
My friend bought the entire collection that day...they were closing that grand old room...

You got me on that one. I don't know of a single "billiards" table in northern Colorado.

We had some in our university's Student Union when I first came here, but they weren't replaced after a very unusual and damaging flood we had on campus in 1997.

Regards,
Dave

Oh – Oh – should have kept my mouth shut – sorry. I too have no desire to get in a discussion of religion. One quick answer and as Forrest Gump would say – That is all I have to say about that.

What do all religions have in common – Love one another.

Christians retain a concept of Hell that I do not believe. Jesus of the New Testament said something to the effect, I did not come to subvert the law, I bring you a new law – Love one another.

Christianity diverges from many of the religions of the world with its retention of the Old Testament’s vengeful God. I do not believe this conception is correct – There is no Hell except the one we make for ourselves.

I respect Christianity and merely see it as limiting. As one of my friends says there are no ex Catholics only recovering Catholics/ And with that, I am off to shoot pool, getting out of here before all hell breaks lose -- see ya all tomorrow.

Remember it? Now you've got me singing it in my head! I'd sing out loud but I repsect others too much to do that to them.

I do not want to start a whole religious thread here but I do agree with you. I am a born and raised Catholic and have stuck by it my whole life and believed. The only difference between me and most is I like to keep an open mind. You said it best, all religions have love one another in common. Other than that the bible was written so long ago and in such old english there are millions of interpretations and I will never know what is absolutely correct until my final judgement. Until then an open mind is the way to go, along with helping, contributing, and loving when it is possible.
