I don't know how I have missed these but I just ran across some Guinness advertisements about how pool got started.

Maybe they were eye balling the couch to improve the wood bumpers they had?

I think the stone on the table was supposed to be an accident and the ball jumping over the stone gave them the beginnings of the idea for a jump shot. I think the mutilated couch in the background was to show where they got the material for their new 'felt'.

Do you know what the joke is at the end of: The felt is added (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P2sszP9pUM), with the ball hop over the rock and the camera pan to the "couch?" Embarrassingly, I don't get it.
