Clips from one of Robert Wuhl's HBO "Assume the Position" specials. If you've never seen them, it's very interesting stuff and you should check out the shows in their entirety if you ever get the chance. He's big on pointing out American history as being a "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend" type of lore that we tend to use. I included one clip above, but should give you a starting point to find more if you don't have access to HBO programming.

Me too dear! I always just likened "pop culture" to maybe this and the last generation. I never realized how much of our history is really just legend, myth, lore, and pop culture until I saw his specials! if I'm not mistaken, I believe I read somewhere that HBO signed a deal with him to do a few more of those too. I can't wait! The whole Paul Revere thing really through me for a loop the first time I saw it!
