View Full Version : Pelosi sneaked another one in...

I had mentioned on the board a little while ago about Hillary trying to get in about $2 billion in earmarks in case she did not win the Presidential election. Well it looks like Pelosi is looking out for her backers also... Farm Bill Yet Another Example of Democrats' Broken Promises on Earmark Reform (http://www.townhall.com/columnists/JohnBoehner/2008/05/12/farm_bill_yet_another_example_of_democrats_broken_ promises_on_earmark_reform). <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">There’s something fishy in the Farm Bill, and taxpayers should beware. It’s a $170 million earmark for the salmon industry, quietly tucked into the mammoth bill at the last minute by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA). I don’t know much about the salmon industry. Perhaps Pelosi and Thompson can explain why it was necessary to earmark $170 million of the taxpayers’ money with no public scrutiny or debate. The earmark wasn’t in the House-passed Farm Bill or the Senate version; it was simply “air-dropped” into the final bill in secret. </div></div> <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">These examples serve as a perfect illustration of why taxpayers are fed up with a broken Washington. Despite the Speaker’s promises to “drain the swamp” at the beginning of the 110th Congress, it has become increasingly clear why Democrats are fighting as hard as they can to keep the earmark factory open on Capitol Hill. Not only have Democratic leaders have “showered” their newly-elected Members in pork in the attempt to help them win re-election, but their senior members – including the “King of Pork,” Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) – have made it clear that wasteful earmarks are here to stay. </div></div> LOL, Pelosi's first 100 hours were a joke and she has continued to be a huge disappointment.

This isn't the first time she has turned a trick for the salmon industry. I'm so glad we have someone like her to help keep the nasty republicans in line! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Indeed ! These Democrats have been singularly incompetent, as well as corrupt as any Republicans.

Where are all the Lefties on this site when this begs comment?

"...begs comment" why is that, just because someone wrote something they believe to be negative....the "lefties" are supposed to rush in and defend the charges? We'll wait until the "Republican like" kickback charges are included.
At least she is trying to do something for an American industry, an important part of the economy on the west coast...sorry if your Haliburton and Blackwater companies didn't get their fair share.
You think maybe Nancy was trying to help, trying to take the heat off this crooked admin, by doing something illegal herself?

This is really a joke.

Bush has run up more debt than all previous administrations combined, and what's their focus? Earmarks!

Typical Republicans, penny wise and pound foolish!

Democrats are for paygo. Every single Republican President who promised his way into office with a pie in the sky fantasy about running government, cutting taxes, and then running up deficits, left the country in a recession, or huge inflation.

Our numbers were very good when Clinton left office, now how much of an idiot do you have to be to have voted for Goerge Bush, knowing that he is leaving this country with the worst debt we've ever had, a weak economy, huge job losses in the manufacturing sector, a recession that the majority of Americans acknoweldge, but Bush denies, strung out in the Middle East in a war that was a foreign policy disaster, oweing nine trillion dollars to pay for a war, and tax cuts for the rich, and they want to yap about Pelosi's earmark!

BWA HA HA HA....too funny!

It would be nice if you could even get this accurate. It's penny wise, dollar foolish. Pound has nothing to do with money unless you're dealing in English pounds, and then it would be " pence wise, pound foolish". But hey, you're a democratic so you can make it up on the fly.

Just another rightie, frustrated by the overwhelming facts, the obvious disgust that 81% Of Americans have with the mess Bush has made of this country, and only a 28% approval rating. What else can they do but jump on here and attack people.

It comes out in them with a vengence, but we all know, Republicans have made a mess of everything, just like they always do, and hence, they're losing seats left and right, and can't raise money near the Democratic rate.

As more offensive, disgusting facts emerge about the failure of Bush's policies, I expect them to become even more insulting, and even more absurd in their posts. What's really funny is all their insults don't change a thing. Americans have had it with Republicans. We are far from the only ones. And, we have the advantage of having predicted the very fubar we are witnessing now.

Anyway, friend, how dare you post anything that doesn't fit into their absurd ideology! What were you thinking! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Dick,
The good news is that the right is unhappy with Pelosi. She must be doing a grand job!

They get so upset when any money goes to Corporations that keep their money and jobs here in America, you know.

Ho-hum, I see Ed is backing off his previous stance on GW, now he's saying it exists, and partly caused by human activity. Another Republican flip-flopper. I guess we'll have to listen to denials, good thing we have the archives.

Good news is that the nutty right has shrunk to 19%. That's how many still approve of Bush. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

they keep trying to come up with "dirt" on Nancy...a while back it was her "interference" in the tuna industry in Samoa.
While looking that up...I came across this:

" 1. American Samoa was already exempt from the U.S. mainland minimum wage. The wage floors for various sectors in Samoa are set by a review board appointed by the US Department of Labor. The minimum wage for the Samoan fish canning industry is currently set at 3.26 an hour. The Republican gripe centered on the fact that the new legislation extended full minimum wage coverage to the former Abramoff-client Northern Marianas Islands - which previously had no wage floors at all - while leaving Samoa untouched. The Republicans want a similar review board set-up in the Marianas.

2. The legislation was generated by House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (D-CA) not Speaker Pelosi. This doesn't necessarily mean she didn't have input into it but I don't find the argument that she was bought off by Starkist compelling. How many corporations have connections to San Francisco?

3. There are legitimate concerns about the impact of raising the minimum wage on the tuna industry which employs 40 percent of the Samoan workforce.

4. Pelosi aides have now said the committee would be asked to work toward having all territories use the same wage standard.

Occasional missteps by the Democratic Congress are inevitable. The important thing is that policy is openly debated and adjusted as necessary in a timely fashion. This debate is a good step in that direction. The Republican culture of corruption, back rooms and favoritism cannot be allowed to again be institutionalized."

Well, that's old news now....a "scandal" that didn't quite do the smear job that was intended to put her in the same boat with the indicted Presidential cronies.
Tuna, salmon????.......Nancy's just a small fish, swimming with the Republican sharks......

Penny Wise And Pound Foolish:

: The meaning of the phrase is something on the line of "saving a little money only to lose a great deal more due to their own stupidity."

PENNY WISE AND POUND FOOLISH - "Overcareful about trivial things and undercareful about important ones. The literal image is of the person who fusses over small amounts of money to such an extent that he misses opportunities to save or make large amounts. But the figurative image goes way back; in 'The Historie of Foure-footed Beastes' (1607) Edward Topsell wrote: 'If by covetousnesse or negligence, one withdraw from them their ordinary foode, he shall be penny wise, and pound foolish.'" From "The Dictionary of Cliches" by James Rogers (Ballantine Books, New York, 1985).

What Delay, and others, tried to do to those (mostly women, and children) workers in the Mariana Islands was one of the most inhumane actions I have ever read about. They should be prosecuted for contributing to inhumane abuses.

It really is disgusting to have to read about AMericans who would look the other way over such horrible actions, merely because they want a tax cut!

Actually repulsive!

I remember that nobody on the right commented about the conditions there, even after you had brought that to the board's attention. But... a couple were very concerned about the Samoan workers, when they thought they could use that against Pelosi.

We did see them put Polar Bears on the threatened species list yesterday. There were 25,000 in the 1960's and their numbers have shrunk to only 60,000 in that time. Scientists fear if it gets any warmer, they might decline to hundreds of thousands by 2050.
