I saw Carl Sagan make an interesting comment on the development of scientific theory the other night. When astronomers first looked at Venus, they could not see anything because it was all covered in clouds. Well, what are clouds make of? Water. So, if there is that much water in the atmosphere then the surface must be a swamp and if you have a swamp then there must be swamp plants like giant ferns and if there are swamp plants and giant ferns then there must be dinosaurs.
Observation: I can't see anything.
Conclusion: Venusian Swamp Dinosaurs.
In it's time this was a generally accepted scientific theory. I remember hearing about it when I was a kid. I think it says a lot about what's going on today.
