Palin, victim

A new McCain ad on TV deplores the "attacks on Governor Palin" and cites John Fund's suggestion -- flatly denied by Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor, and unconfirmed elsewhere -- that 30 Democratic operatives were "airdropped" into Alaska to research Palin. The ad also cites a FactCheck.org item that attacks not Obama, but anonymous online rumors -- mocking the ad monitor, and inviting a meta-FactCheck.

One thing that's interesting about the spot: It seems to suggest that McCain's campaign is sensitive to the perception that he's the only one going negative, and retains some concern that the contrast between Obama's perceived "new politics" and his slash-and-burn ad campaign could be effective.

Another thought: Hillary Clinton always walked a very careful line on portraying herself as a victim, attempting never to let that get in the way of her perceived strength as she built a commander-in-chief persona. The McCain campaign is dwelling on Palin's victimhood, a new chapter in the short history of women in presidential politics.
