I just ordered Shamos' book the Complete book of Billiards. Now I want to know what you all thought of it?Jake
It is simply a reprint of the first version of his "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Billiards." I think every player ought to have that or the "New Illustrated Encyclopedia of Billiards" which is the second edition. The "Complete Book of Billiards" is the title that the publisher put on, and doesn't really describe the book. I see that it is available for under $10 including shipping.
The "Billiard Encyclopedia -second edition" by Stein & Robino is about $150. Is that the same as the "New Illustrated Encyclopedia of Billiards"? Is "Billiard Encyclopedia -second edition" worth $140 more?
Shamos' Encyclopedia is an illustrated dictionary covering about 2500 different words and expressions in pool and billiards.
The Encyclopedia by Stein and Rubino is a much larger work with many beautiful photographs, that covers the history of the game and has a large section on cue makers.
I think both books are must-haves for pool nuts.

Under $10? It has a suggested retail price of $35. I was robbed. Actually I got it on Ebay for $13.57. In hardcover. Jake

eBay is the wrong place to get books still in print, usually. The site www.BookCloseOuts.com (http://www.BookCloseOuts.com) has it listed for $5.49 (hardback) plus shipping.
Half.com also has it listed. The site http://www.bookarea.com/ searches all of these sites.
What a GREAT reference for book price comparison. Thanks!!
