JACKSON, Miss. - A northern Mississippi school district will not be hosting a high school prom this spring after a lesbian student asked to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

The Itawamba County school district's board decided Wednesday to drop the prom because of what it called recent distractions, but without specifically mentioning the girl's request, which was backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The student, 18-year-old high school senior Constance McMillen, said it was retaliation for her efforts to bring her girlfriend, also a student, to the April 2 dance.

Nice! Screw it up for the whole senior class, because one couple wants to make things difficult.

How simple would it have been for the two girls to just go to the prom and spend time with each other? As I recall from my prom, you didn't have to have an "approved date" to attend, although they did restrict it to just students of our school.

Sounds like the girl just wanted to stir up some sheite, got the ACLU involved, and forced the school to cancel, rather than deal with the whole issue.

I hope all her classmates let her know just how they feel.

I guess they don't have "Don't ask, Don't tell" in High School in Mississippi!

On a positive note....it stops some on the annoying "Can I cut in, and have this dance?" requests.
The last H.S. prom I attended, I went as a favor to my friends sister. Her date had gotten cold feet at the last moment, and I drew the short straw. Her family rented the tux for me. Everything went well, except they made her take off the dog collar I had bought for her to wear, instead of flowers....

Seems to me it was the school who were making a big deal out of it.

So why didn't she just dress however she wanted to and go??
Calling in the ACLU was done to get publicity and for no other reason.
And she still doesn't get to escort her girlfriend to the prom!
