What to draw lines on the cloth with?

My friend and I want to draw lines on his cloth. Diamond across the opposite diamond. Can we just use ballpoint pen? Would it affect the ball's roll?

I have used both ball point pen and Sharpie permanent markers. Neither will effect the roll of the ball and both will wear off in time. dave

Just put little tiny x's with a sharpie at the intersections of the diamonds. No need for lines.
