The police-officer niece of former major-league player Shawon Dunston allegedly shot her girlfriend twice at an apartment with their two young children inside, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
The violence erupted after Ekeythia Dunston, 32, received a text message at around 3:10 a.m. Monday that angered her girlfriend of five years, Erica Legall, according to sources.
They began arguing, and Legall, 42, struck Dunston in the head with an iron, prompting the cop -- who joined the force in 2002 -- to draw a gun and fire twice, police said.
Legall was hit in the thigh and shoulder. It was not clear if Dunston, who sources said was intoxicated, used her service weapon.
Dunston's son, Daichoi, 13, and Legall's child, Jaden, 7, were in the couple's Harlem apartment along with another 32-year-old woman.
"I'm so shaken up. The kids are fine though," Dunston's mom, Michelle, said, confirming the suspect's relationship to the 18-year major-league infielder who was with six teams after arriving in the NL with the Cubs in 1985.
Dunston, who was suspended without pay, was charged with assault, weapons possession and endangering the welfare of a child, cops said.
Legall, who was in stable condition at the hospital, was also charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
