Jefferson City, MO -- For over 14 years, Congressman Roy Blunt has used earmarks and government spending to run up record levels of red ink. In fact, as a key member of the Republican Congressional leadership, Blunt led the charge to recklessly spend taxpayer money, turning a $128 billion surplus into a $1.2 trillion deficit.

Even members of his own party are criticizing his record of wasteful spending, like his primary opponent State Senator Chuck Purgason who said, "When Representative Blunt was in the leadership the deficit grew almost $1.5 trillion. Republicans have [proven] they can't balance the budget either." [Chuck Purgason, KC Star 12/27/09]

"Missouri families know that Congressman Roy Blunt has a very clear and unmistakable record of wasteful government spending, which is why he's taking heat from Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike," said Ryan Hobart, Communications Director for the Missouri Democratic Party. "Big Spender Congressman Blunt was part of the Congressional leadership team that represents the very worst of Washington, and ultimately, their waste and abuse turned a $128 billion surplus into a $1.2 trillion deficit."

Recently, his fellow Republicans and political analysts have started to notice his wasteful record may cost him in this political environment because "Rep. Roy Blunt looks like the poster child for Washington, D.C., Republicans." [Stu Rothenberg, CQ, 10/17/10] “The recent losses of a Republican senator in his Utah primary and a Democrat House member in his West Virginia primary are proof that Americans are fed up with Washington, D.C. big government policies,” said Purgason.

CONGRESSMAN BLUNT’S UNIQUE RECORD of INCREASING THE DEFICIT AND DEBT:

Exploding Deficits - Blunt Turned $128 Billion Surplus into $1.2 Trillion Deficit: The Bush-Blunt team inherited a budget surplus of $128 billion in 2001 but proceeded to post deficits every single year after that. In fact, the Blunt-led Republican majority never once balanced its annual budgets. As a result, by the time Bush left office in 2009, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated a deficit of $1.2 trillion. [CNN, 1/28/09; New York Times, 8/25/09]

Skyrocketing Debt - Blunt Oversaw Doubling of the National Debt: During the time Blunt was in the Republican leadership, the national debt nearly doubled from $5.7 trillion in 1999 to more than $10 trillion eight years later - an over $4 trillion increase. [TreasuryDirect.gov]

Increased the Size and Scope of Government to “Unprecedented Levels”: Congressman Blunt was a loyal rubber stamp for former President George Bush who, according to Nick Gillespie of the Reasonmagazine “increased the size and scope of the federal government to unprecedented levels.” According to the Heritage Foundation, the Bush Administration – with the support of Congressman Blunt – imposed almost $30 billion in new regulatory costs on Americans between 2001 and 2008. The total staffing of regulatory agencies increased from 172,000 to 244,000 between fiscal 2001 and fiscal 2007. [Wall Street Journal, 1/24/09; Heritage Foundation]

CONGRESSMAN BLUNT’S UNIQUE RECORD of ABUSING PORK BARREL SPENDING AND EARMARKS:

Springfield News Leader: Blunt Allowed Earmarks to Get Out Of Control. In 2007, a Springfield News-Leader editorial said Blunt “allowed earmarks to get out of control during an era of no accountability.” Similarly, a 2006 editorial in the Providence Journal called Blunt a “prodigious pork-meister.” [Springfield News-Leader, Editorial, 6/16/07; Providence Journal, 2/6/06]

Watchdog Exposed Blunt for Shady Earmark Practices: In 2009, the Center for Public Integrity highlighted an earmark Blunt helped push through for a company represented by his former Chief of Staff, Gregg Hartley. According to the report, the earmark was a “textbook case” of a pattern where “former staffers become lobbyists for firms seeking earmarks; the Representatives secure earmarks for the companies those lobbyists represent, and the contractors and/or the lobbyists send campaign contributions to those members of Congress.” In 2007, Blunt obtained a $4 million earmark for a battery company represented by Hartley, who in turn has contributed $11,783 in campaign contributions to Blunt since 2006. According to the Center’s analysis, Blunt was “the lone member of the Congressional leadership to participate” in this controversial practice. [Center for Public Integrity, 10/5/09]

Failing Grades on Club for Growth RePORK Cards: Blunt has received failing grades from the conservative Club for Growth for his voting record on wasteful pork barrel spending projects. In 2007, he received a mere 22%. "Taxpayers have a right to know which congressmen stand up for them and which stand up for the special interests," said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. "Unfortunately, the Club for Growth RePORK Card shows that most congressmen care more about lining their buddies' pockets than they care about protecting American taxpayers." Blunt did better in 2009, but still failed, reaching only a 48% score. [ClubforGrowth.org, Accessed 5/16/10]

We get it, Reps have pork. All we really want to see is for you to man up and start posting about the Dem's pork spending also.

After ALL their whining about pork, there was no mention of pork in their 'Pledge", how come?

Surely the omission means they are ready to pile on the pork when they get the chance.

Well, being that Sheldon and Gayle post mirror images of each other it does get confusing.

Let me take the liberty of correcting James and giving G the benefit of a doubt ... I hope she finds the ovarian fortitude to start calling people out over their deeds as opposed to their party affiliation.

Ain't going to happen. Her entire political agenda is based entirely on party affiliation, hence her assertation that no matter what, she would never vote for a Republican.

It's that memtality that has allowed our political system to deteriorate to the point we have reached.

Blind partisanship is a sign of pure ignorance. She finds it much less mentally taxing to pick a party, rather than actually evaluate an individual's actions. Let the party think for you, and you don't have to work at it.

It's lazy and stupid, and seems to be a growing trend.

</div></div>I guess it wasn't something they wanted to tackle at this time? Who knows and who cares about your speculation. The left was the big earmark spenders on our previous Presidential election and it was no problem for them then, why now? We need Biden and Obama to quit approving projects like the Bridge to Nowhere, just like we need the Reps to quit approving earmarks. Only ignorant people think this is a one party problem.

I haven't counted, but it appears to be happening with more frequency lately.

You have to finish "draining the swamp" before you clear out the pork. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

As is proven by her continual bleating of how the democrooks are responsible for the republican congress shrinking the early Clinton/democrook regime's deficits by 90% ... actually reaching a point that a balance of payments existed.

Follow that up with the ridiculous claim that it is the republichickens fault that the democrook congress has increased the national deficit by a factor of EIGHT in under 4 years.

"BLACKWHITE" and "DOUBLETHINK" are amazing things to witness.

I wonder how many members here have this:
