House Democratic leaders, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the helm, tonight voiced confidence that voters will prove political pundits wrong and keep Democrats in control of the lower chamber of Congress.

"People all over the country are not going to be told by people in Washington how this election will turn out. They will speak for themselves," Pelosi told an upbeat crowd of around 400 supporters gathered for a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee election watch reception at Washington's Liaison Hotel.

The California lawmaker touted that Democrats "have the best ground operation to get out the vote."

"They're out there because they know the tremendous difference that this election will make," Pelosi said of the party's volunteer ground game.

"We are not going back to the failed policies of the past," she vowed. "We are fighting for the middle class!"

Pelosi has struck an optimistic note all day long, telling reporters earlier this afternoon that Democrats were "on pace" to maintain their majority in the House, despite widespread predictions that they were doomed to defeat tonight.

Pelosi was joined at tonight's event by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen.

"As we speak voters are proving the pundits wrong," Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, said to cheers. "We saw the early signs of that in the early voting states, in the vote by mail, in the in-person voting. And today as people opened their doors in the morning and went to the polls, we saw strong Democratic turnout, much higher than had been predicted."
