The Immaculate Conception of Mary is, according to Catholic doctrine, the conception of the Virgin Mary without any stain ("macula" in Latin) of Original Sin.[1] It is one of the four dogmas in Roman Catholic Mariology. Under this aspect Mary is sometimes called the Immaculata (the Immaculate One), particularly in artistic contexts.[2]

The doctrine states that, from the first moment of her existence, Mary was preserved by God from the Original Sin and filled with sanctifying grace that would normally come with baptism after birth. Catholics believe Mary "was free from any personal or hereditary sin".[3][4] Mary's immaculate conception should not be confused with the Incarnation of her son Jesus Christ; the conception of Jesus is celebrated as the Annunciation to Mary. Catholics do not believe that Mary, herself, was the product of a Virgin Birth.[5]

From early on in the history of the Catholic Church, in numerous places in the writings of the Church Fathers, the belief is implicitly stated.[citation needed] In various places the feast of the Immaculate Conception had been celebrated for centuries on 8 December when, on 28 February 1476, Pope Sixtus IV[6] extended it to the entire Latin Church. He did not define the doctrine as a dogma, thus leaving Roman Catholics free to believe in it or not without being accused of heresy; this freedom was reiterated by the Council of Trent. However, the feast was a strong indication of the Church's traditional belief in the Immaculate Conception.[7][8] On 6 December 1708 Pope Clement XI decreed that the feast of the Immaculate Conception be a Holy Day of Obligation.[9] throughout the entire Catholic Church.

The Immaculate Conception was solemnly defined as a dogma by Pope Pius IX in his constitution Ineffabilis Deus on 8 December 1854.[10] The Catholic Church teaches that the dogma is supported by Scripture (e.g., Mary's being greeted by the Angel Gabriel as "full of grace") as well as either directly or indirectly by the writings of Church Fathers such as Irenaeus of Lyons and Ambrose of Milan.[11][12] Catholic theology maintains that since Jesus became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, it was fitting that she be completely free of sin for expressing her fiat.[13] In 1904 Pope Saint Pius X also addressed the issue in his Marian encyclical Ad Diem Illum on the Immaculate Conception.[14]

Silver Shekels From Time of Jesus Found at Archaeological Dig
with 2 comments By guest blogger Don Hooser

I recently learned about this amazing discovery when I was talking with Dr. Richard Berendt of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He and two of his children—Stephanie and Karl—worked on the archaeological excavation at Kibbutz Ramet Rachel in 2008, the year when the silver coins were discovered at that site.

The site is south of Jerusalem about halfway to Bethlehem. Part of what has been uncovered is a columbarium or dovecote, a cave with niches in the walls for doves that were raised to sell for food and for temple sacrifices.

A pot of silver
The surprising discovery was that covered up in one of the niches was a pot containing 15 large pure silver coins. These were the one shekel coins that were specially made in Tyre and were the only type of coin that was allowed for paying the “temple tax.”

What was a pot holding coins doing at the bottom of a cave used for raising pigeons? According to the director of the excavations, Dr. Oded Lipschits of Tel Aviv University, the pot was covered up in a way that indicates that it had been concealed in a hurry. “We know that coins like these were brought to the Temple,” he says. “Possibly after the Temple was destroyed [in 70 CE] there was no place to bring the coins, and since the columbarium was no longer in use, they buried the coins here.”

An alternative interpretation was put forward by dig staff:
The shekels were obviously carefully hidden in the niche by the owner or person working in the underground columbarium actively raising the pigeons. This was a more strategic place than a home, as homes were likely to be searched by invaders. Perhaps this was before the impending Roman invasion of Jerusalem and destruction of the temple. It was a large treasure, not one to be forgotten, and therefore the person hiding it was evidently unable to return for it. Perhaps he was unable to retrieve it because he perished in the 70 CE fight with Rome, or was taken captive.

Scriptural shekels
The origin of the commandment to pay the half shekel head-tax to the temple is this scripture: “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ‘When you take the census of the children of Israel for their number, then every man shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord… This is what everyone among those who are numbered shall give: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (a shekel is twenty gerahs). The half-shekel shall be an offering to the Lord’” (Exodus 30:11-13).

At the time of the temple’s construction, every Israelite was commanded to make an obligatory donation of a half shekel to the edifice. This modest sum allowed all Jews, of all economic levels, to participate in the building the temple. After the construction was completed, they continued to collect the tax from every Israelite for the purpose of purchasing the public sacrifices and renewing the furnishings of the temple.

It was most likely a shekel of Tyre that Jesus and Peter used to pay the temple head tax (a half shekel each): “When they [Jesus and His disciples] had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, ‘Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?’” (Matthew 17:24).

Soon afterwards, Jesus said, “Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you” (Matthew 17:27).

Moreover, Tyrian silver coins probably comprised the infamous payment to Judas Iscariot, when “they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver” (Matthew 26:15).

Excited volunteers
The shekels that were found in the excavation each weigh 13 grams and were struck in the year 22 CE. (Today, one of these coins can be purchased for about $1,000.)

As usual, in 2008 volunteers had come from several countries to work in the dig. Dr. Lipschits said, “In spite of the heat, they don’t complain. Many of the volunteers on the dig are Christians and for them, finding coins from the time of Jesus is more than just a scientific discovery.”

Here’s a link to an interesting video about the site and the most exciting find—the 15 silver shekels from the second temple period.

Catholics say Mary stayed a virgin even after she had Jesus,
and Joseph never even got a sniff.
All those "brothers" were actually cousins.

Protestants are more flexible.
Yeah, she probably had sex with Joseph later.
Yeah, those brothers are probably His brothers.
But they don't like to talk about it.
It's an inconvenient truth.

Not sure what Eastern Orthodox believe.
