refinishing shaft(s)

I acquired a well worn Mali cue awhile back, which appeared to have been sanded a bit over-enthusiatically. I'd like to attempt a spray finish, but don't know whether to go with an automotive set-up, with reducer and hardener, or what. . . .

Anyone have any suggestions for refinishing a shaft?
