Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker won election in 2010, in large part by campaigning fiercely on limited government. One of his signature promises was a rejection of $810 million in federal stimulus dollars for high-speed rail between Milwaukee and Madison.[/size][size:14pt]Walker followed through on turning those dollars down. But now, he is joining several other Midwestern states in asking for $150 million in federal funds to pay for upgrades to an Amtrak line</span>.

In a striking irony, the funds he's requesting are only available because another conservative governor, Rick Scott of Florida, rejected some $2 billion for a high-speed rail project in his state. <span style='font-size: 14pt'>That line would have joined Tampa and Orlando along a busy corridor whose Interstate 4 is often packed with traffic.</span>Those $2 billion are now available for other states, and Walker's hoping to get a piece of the action.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel asked Governor Walker about his apparent 180 on the issue. He apparently had no qualms with asking for the cash:

Walker said he had always supported improvements to the Hiawatha line. It's a popular and established service, without the local opposition that complicated the Milwaukee-to-Madison link that he campaigned against.

"This is not inconsistent with the position I took in the past," he said.

His position in the past was, in part, based on the concern that the state would have to shoulder too much financial burden to support the federally-backed high-speed project. BizTimes.com, a Milwaukee-area business news site, <span style='font-size: 14pt'>points out that the state's costs for the $810 million project would have been as low as $750,000 per year</span>.Walker claims that this project, a set of improvements to the Hiawatha line from Milwaukee to Chicago, would save the state money by lowering operating costs and allowing for growth in the rail line, according to an Associated Press report. <span style='font-size: 14pt'>But the Journal-Sentinel says that the maintenance building involved in the project will cost the state $12 million, 16 times more than the annual cost of the high-speed rail project Walker turned down</span>.<span style='font-size: 14pt'>Milwaukee Alderman Robert Bauman is less than optimistic that Walker's spiting of the last round of stimulus dollars will be so easily forgotten. From BizTimes:</span><span style='font-size: 14pt'>
"After the way they kicked dust in the face of the president of the United States and the Department of Transportation I think there is zero chance Wisconsin gets a dime,” said Bauman,</span> who represents the downtown area and is a passionate mass transit supporter. “These people are living in an <span style='font-size: 20pt'>altered state of reality."</span></span> </div></div> /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Saw that. Too sweet.

He wants to cut the budget because they are spending too much, [ same line as the Party ] but he now grabs GOVT money [ increasing the Nat Debt ] because his masters want their share.

A total flip-flop and it shows quite clearly he is a sham. He is a Govnr in the employment of corporate America. He knows where HIS bread is buttered and its not with the majority of the people in WI.

After this is all over, just watch him walk into a job with the people who control him now.

I honestly wouldn't be at all surprised if he isn't recalled, eventually, and I fully expect the rest of the Repubs, to be recalled.

Now what was that nasty response he threw in the President's face, about taking stimulus money? Can't remember...but it was NASTY!

FLIP-FLOP is the new Republican exercise program.... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif and they don't even have to go to the gym, to do it. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
