TEN THINGS TO LEARN FROM THE JAPANESE WHEN DISASTER STRIKES...

1. CALM
Not a single visual of chest-beating or wild grief. Sorrow itself has been elevated.

2. DIGNITY
Disciplined queues for water and groceries. Not a rough word or a crude gesture.

3. ABILITY
The incredible architects, for instance. Buildings swayed but didn't fall.

4. GRACE
People bought only what they needed for the present, so everybody could get something.

5. ORDER
No looting in shops. No honking and no overtaking on the roads. Just understanding.

6. SACRIFICE
Fifty workers stayed back to pump sea water in the N-reactors. How will they ever be repaid?

7. TENDERNESS
Restaurants cut prices. An unguarded ATM is left alone. The strong cared for the weak.

8. TRAINING

The old and the children, everyone knew exactly what to do. And they did just that.

9. MEDIA
They showed magnificent restraint in the bulletins. No silly reporters. Only calm reportage.

10. CONSCIENCE
When the power went off in a store, people put things back on the shelves and left quietly.
** **

And bonus # 11. I saw a report where a shoe store owner had shoes that got dirty and was giving them away. People stood quietly waiting their turn to see if their size was available.

Actually on #5 I know that is not true from individuals in Japan. Albeit it was not on a massive scale.

However back to what Americans would do? New Orleans after Katrina is all we need to look at.

There was a time when helping your neighbor was something that was expected. However that is no longer true. Americans are now taught to be self serving and entitled.

......only someone like you could compare mentioning that atrocity during WWII to a sexual urge/fantasy. One of their favorite tortures was to tie an American prisoner to a tree, heat up his helmet, place a rat inside and strap the helmet to his stomach.
I suppose a mind like yours would then claim I enjoy S & M by writing that?
I would hope that you have a thing for sex as well.....it's part of the healthy human condition.......people who repress such a basic human need, have been known to do all kinds of terrible things as a replacement for that drive. Most of your mass murderers, would be a good example....

Yes, after a lifetime of working for the man, I am now taking advantage of those entitlements, namely a pension, and SS ..which is by the way, Social Security insurance, and was based on sound actuarial tables, as most insurance is. That every admin used it as a piggy bank, and depleted it, does not alter that fact.

I never know just what point your are making, if any and I thought you were just ranting on, trying hard here for them non- existent rep points. I'm wondering how my "no respect for you..." remark makes any point other then that I consider you irrelevant, out of your league and over-matched in any conversation here. Now that's just my opinion and I have to add that your now, non-secret admirer, does not share that assessment of your posts, and probably others no not, as well.
As I have never climbed any corporate ladders other then to clear the rain gutters, I don't have any strong endorsements for my own opinions. I understand that, and have already been suspended for voicing them here.

It's impossible for me to picture you as going out of your way to assist others. Helping a little old lady, in a wheelchair, cross the street? Where do you volunteer that you would run into people openly advocating socialism? The local "soup kitchen"?
I could see you as a member of the JBS, but doubt they would let you join. (and yes, I have been to a few of their meetings, and shared an apt, part time with a woman, who was a Bircher, as was her husband, a retired Army Colonel (nice folks though)
My favorite memory from that time;... she was out distributing her "hate flyers" as I liked to call them, and dropped a pile of them. A young lesbian rushed over to help this little old lady; began picking the flyers up and noticed what the message was. It turned into a loud "debate" on a busy street, with traffic stopping to see what the commotion was about. Damn, I wish I could have filmed it, or at least witnessed it.

Mac,
The USA, and those who founded and settled the USA, surely did their share of Ethnic cleansing over the centuries....

Also, once a country supports torture, they have created a black mark on their honor, which will always be the disgraceful legacy of the Bush Administration.

Repuglicans are practicing ethnic and class cleansing, right now, and have been doing so for thirty years, but using the budget to do so, starving off thhe poor and the dark, while redistributing all of the country's wealth, to the rich...

Repuglicans current polan giver the average millionaire, a two hundred thousand dollar tax cut, while taking more from the middle and the poor.

Death Panels? The average senior would pay six thousand dollars more, for health care.

They are going to kill off the poor, the old, the ill, and the poverty strickened, which are mostly of ethnic groups...

By cutting education, they are going to trap the next generation of ethnic groups, into poverty, and their refusal to add taxes for the top, to adjust for our debts, as they deprive those who need help, of decent health care, they will kill off many.

People over $250,000 get over a trillion dollars in tax relief.

They are clearly taking more from seniors annd the middle class, to give more to the wealthy in enormous giveaways, and given the cost of heat and gas, Repiglicans are killing off the hungry, and poor, to give more to thhose who bilked us over the last eight years, in insurance, health, pharmaceuticals, and energy...

It's not only ethnic cleansing, to cut off health services for women all over this country, who can't afford expensive cancer screening, it is also class cleansing, where soon, only the wealthy will be able to afford health care....given the unsustainable rising cost of health and health insurance services....

PIGS!

After their hero, George Bush, allowed the outsourcing of jhobs, for eight years, without addressing the loss of revenue in the trade deficit, and tax revenues, and grew the government, jborrowed more money than all previous administrations, combined, sent the message to Wall St. and the Banks, and Financial institutions, anything goes, nobody'es watching, steal all you want, as he lost jobs like water through a tea strainer, and "Lost" billions in his ridiculas War based on cherry picked lies, no wonder people can't find jobs....

The right lies about their fellow Americans....Americans are not lazy, they want to work, and Republicans created cheap slave labor in our country, while they redistributed wealth, to the top, for eight years.

The Middle Class has been smothered out by Repiglicans.....bottom line.

Very few threads here stick strictly to the original topic, and fewer still, adhere to Robert's Rules of Debate; but you now have just become aware of that?
You can't seem to let any of her posts go by without you adding some uncalled for, negative commentary to them. (you still bragging about your imagined put downs against her, over on that other site?) Try adhering to the topic at hand, and leaving the school boy taunts out of your posts. You sure they weren't being pushed by their Johnson's? (a double entendre, of sorts)
I don't know about the present company, but years ago Evinrude merged with Johnson and formed Evinrude Johnson. The Evinrude name was on everything up to a 35hp, and then the Johnson name was applied.....you wouldn't want to call something barely big enough to penetrate..... the water, like a trolling motor...a Johnson?
By the way we don't call it aluminium here, but I know that is a British term
I was probably about 15 when my cousin and I heard that a boat and motor had been stolen from the local Rod & Gun club, and had been crashed into the stone break wall, about a 1/2 mile from shore, and sunk.
We rented Scuba gear and set out to find it, and we did, but the CG patrol boat also found us, and took down our names. We had that Evinrude motor in about a 1000 parts, when the police came to my house and picked it back up. Seems one of the parties that owned it, shared a surname with me, and the insurance co believing it was a scam, claimed the boat under the.......... "you can't have your cake and eat it" law (ok, I jes made that up)
good thing they did, as I would still be trying to put that motor together.....

Not at all wolfi. Would she choose the environment over a 100 million people and then blame republicans for it.

Besides as I recall I believe she was cheering for the banning of DDT in one of Larry's threads a year or so ago.

I'm sure that you must be right, however:
"The cancellation decision culminated three years of intensive governmental inquiries into the uses of DDT. As a result of this examination, Ruckelshaus said he was convinced that the continued massive use of DDT posed unacceptable risks to the environment and potential harm to human health."

Better safe then sorry, maybe?

wolfdancer

As the ban was put into effect in 1972, it's a little late for her to be cheering, don't you agree.
She was cheering in one on Larry's 15419 threads? Given his publication rate per day, you must have an amazing memory to recall that bit of info. I can't remember what I posted here yesterday, howver, since I consider most of the threads to be banal, it is of little consequence.
Reading up on DDT and the ban...it seems that safer, alternative methods are now used to do the same job?
