Voters Turn Sharply Away from Tea Party Governors in Florida, Wisconsin

People will attribute the Democratic win in NY-26 to the House GOP plan to end Medicare, and they should. But this backlash actually started much earlier. It started after Republican governors tried to attack workers and push a far-right agenda on states that didn’t want it. Now these governors are paying a high price in terms of popularity.

In Florida, Rick Scott is at almost comically low levels after less than six months on the job.

Florida voters disapprove 57 – 29 percent of the job Gov. Rick Scott is doing, the worst score of any governor in the states surveyed by Quinnipiac University and down from a 48 – 35 percent disapproval in an April 6 survey, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

The state’s new budget is unfair to people like them, voters tell the independent Quinnipiac University poll 54 – 29 percent. Gov. Scott and the State Legislature are equally responsible for the budget, 68 percent of voters say. The legislature’s job approval rating is nearly identical to that of the governor, as voters disapprove 56 – 27 percent, compared to 47 – 35 percent disapproval in April.

This isn’t some Democratic bastion, it’s the ultimate swing state, and Scott’s branding of the GOP as extremely unpopular has to hurt them in the overall scheme of things.

The same thing is happening in Wisconsin, where a high-profile attack on collective bargaining rights has really torpedoed Scott Walker.

Scott Walker’s popularity has continued to decline over the last three months and Wisconsin voters now say they would vote to recall him if there was an election today. They also say they would pick either Russ Feingold or Tom Barrett over Walker in a head to head match up.

43% of voters now approve of the job Walker is doing to 54% who disapprove. When PPP polled the state in late February it was 46% of voters approving to 52% disapproval. Walker’s numbers now are virtually identical to where they were before with Democrats and Republicans but with independents he’s seen his popularity continue to decline from a 45/53 approval spread to a 40/56 one.

Voters split evenly in February at 48% on the question of recalling Walker but now the needle has moved towards bare majority support for removing him early from office. 50% say they would support a recall to 47% who are opposed. That Walker’s disapproval is 54% but the support for recall is only 50% shows there are still some voters who dislike him but wouldn’t go so far as to support removing him from office, but there aren’t many.

Unlike Florida, Wisconsin will have the opportunity to voice their disapproval of Walker very rapidly. There are recall elections coming up in July, and in the PPP poll voters said they’d rather have a Democratic state Senate by a count of 50-42. They flip three seats in July and they get that wish. In addition, Walker himself could be up for a recall come January. PPP has the numbers for that, but they also polled head-to-head matchups between Walker and both Russ Feingold and Tom Barrett. Feingold leads 52-42, and Barrett leads 50-43.

Republicans spent all their political capital on unpopular decisions in a matter of months, and they’re paying a political price. Was it worth it in terms of policy? At the federal level, no, or at least not yet. At the state level, the changes made by Walker and Scott, if they stick, would change those states fundamentally for decades to come. A lot rides on the legal outcome of the anti-union bill in Wisconsin. If they lose the state Senate and don’t even get the collective bargaining changes implemented, then that would be more of a waste.

UPDATE: And now we see that John Kasich looks just as bad as these guys in Ohio, with a 33-56 approval rating. These Tea Party governors are going down in flames.

Yep, and Christie too...

Chris Christie's Poll Numbers Crash
by: Hopeful
Fri May 13, 2011 at 12:35:11 AM EDT

The latest poll from Survey USA tells us we won't be hearing about how popular New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is for long:

New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie, beloved by some and despised by others for his bluntness, has a Minus 18 job approval today as speculation continues about whether Christie should run for President. 38% of NJ adults approve of the job Christie is doing, 56% disapprove.
According to this latest Eyewitness News Poll conducted by SurveyUSA exclusively for WABC-TV in New York City, NJ voters by 5:1 say Christie should not run for President.

* By 2:1, NJ voters say Christie would be a worse president than Barack Obama.
* Obama carried NJ in 2008 by 15 points. Obama's approval rating in NJ today is Plus 14 (54% approve, 40% disapprove).
* Voters split evenly on whether Christie would be better president than George W. Bush.

I have a lot of friends who live in Florida who were furious that Scott turned down the Stumulus money for the high speed Rail, after dealing with that horrible traffic problem along that nightmare highway, for decades.

As my friend in St Pete, tells me, that is a dreaded strip of traffic problems, particularly during rush hours.

In fact, that was supposed to be just the first leg, it was eventually supposed to go all the way through to the East Coast, which would have been great for Florida, in many ways.

It is idiots like you that look for extreme examples. They do pay real money, Ed. They still pay into Medicare, SS, and everything that all other workers pay into.

They still blather about the "High Speed Rail".
Creating would be a logistical nightmare due to population density.

I can only imagine the endless eminent domain cases that would be going to court.

Entire tracks of people would be disenfranchised from their homes as the new track lines were laid.

They have been paying what the rest pay. Do you think that Federal Workers, don't pay into Medicare, and Social Security?

Additionally, if we didn't have a boatload of WAR PROFITEERING Federal contractors, Lobbying and vying for our revenues, to support the Military Industrial Complex, our country wouldn't have been darined by the Rah Rah War Profiteering Neocons, in the first place, for the entire Bush Administration.

That's her style. She throws so much out there in hopes of confusing the issue.

Quite simply, she can't understand the difference between government employees, and private business employees who do business with the government.

But she's never been one to be able to understand simple concepts.

When you got your contract, you knew how much you will earn and how much you have to pay yourself for HC coverage. You signed, you made a deal.
So did the public workers when they signed their contract. Instead of cash, they accepted less take home pay than private workers in exchange for good HC coverage and a decent pension.

BTW, when this first kicked off in Wisconsin [ about how its the public workers who are to blame - not Wall St.], the public workers had already agreed to pay more for their HC, they just didn't agree with [ the mini-Hitler called ] WALKER, from taking away their rights.

Your company has no incentive to cuts costs. Whatever you do, the tax payer pays for it.

Why don't you?????

We are all paying for your great health care plan, with OUR tax dollars, as long as your company is paying for your great plan, from defense dollars, IOW, from our tax dollars.

We all pay into Medicare, and SS. Government workers, as well.

Repiglicans are trying to destroy Medicare, as we know it. Basically, THEY are stealing the dollars, that all the American workers, under fifty-five, have paid into the program, their whole working lives, in order to give more subsiidies to the wealthy top one and a half percent, who cheat on their taxes!!!!

They are throwing seniors to the non exsitant mercy of the Health Insurance Industry.

Most Medicare fraud, is prosecuted BY the Health Insurance, Big pharma, and Medical industries.

Those who are too poor to pay income taxes, are STILL paying taxes!

Why did Repiglicans try to block high fines, for business owners who are working illegals, under the table????

The tax evaders, are the top corporate CEO's, who are draining the nation's economy, and outsourcing jobs, polluting the environement, pulling their con games on Wall St., stealing the wealth of the world, with their crooked, greedy theft, while cheating on their fair share of taxes.

So I started out saying it is sad that we have Scott but I am glad he is forcing the state employees to finally pay real money for their HC and retirement. You try to make this personal by pointing out the fact that I work for a defense contractor but that doesn't stick because I still pay for my HC and retirement yet the state workers were not. So your next attempt to discredit what I am saying is to change the subject and "try" to make this about Medicare and SS but that goes nowhere also because I am not going to sit back and let you change the subject. Scott is not making state workers very happy because they are now going to be required to pay for their own HC and retirement. Welcome to the real world.

So you have absolutely NO benefits in your job?

No 401 K match?

No company health Care plan?

No company Retirement plan?

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif Who do you think you're kidding?

Public Sector workers don't get high salaries.

That's why, teachers, firemen, highway workers, police, etc, need UNIONS to negotiate for them in the form of benefits, ot offset their crappy pay.

How would teachers get by, or policemen, or highway workers, get by, with our unsustainable health costs for care and insurance, without those benefits?

The right prefers a "Free Market" under which, you are all paying for every illegal in this country, and every irresponaible person, who chooses not to get Health Insurance, and then has an accident, or becomes ill, and goes to the emergency room, for the most expensive H.C. of all, yet you scream Socialism, when the President tries to implement a mandate, (which closely followed an original Republican plan)that prohibits irresponsible, or illegal others from runnig up our costs, or forcing us to pay ALL ofthose higher costs for others.

Want to know the costs that bother me the most, generally speaking, of course, DEFENSE costs, which are far too often just more gouging of the tax payer, by contractors, who are well connected to Congress.

My point,.... I certainly don't hold YOU personally resonsible, because you work for a defense contractor, my point, everyone has to make a living, and the right seems to be ready to blame everyone else, except the Republican Party, which blocks regulations, blocks wasting our tax dollars, on protecting oil, unsustainable medical costs, unsustainable Health insurance, and pharma costs, and spent our country into the debt ditch.

Most of our debts, are still from The Bush Tax Cuts, and foreigng policy, trillion dollar unpaid for pharmaceutical giveaways to big pharma, wich no clue how to pay for any of it, no bid defense contractors, uncheck corporate overcharges for seven years in Iraq, warring for no good purpose, blowing money by the Repiglican blank check, record breaking spending borrowing, wasting and stealing, Congress.

Now, that we have that straight...

As the Teabaggers get so worked up over losing "freedom" and "Liberty" to the big, bad Guberment, they are handing over all our rights to the Corporations. It's getting more difficult than ever to take responsibility for yourself and leave a bad situation. Can't start my own business because Health Care is tied to my employment, can't make things better where I'm at because employees are losing all rights.

We are being bludgeoned to death with a perverted interpretation of the Constitution and mobs of morons willing to slit their own throats following their authority figures.

Funny how we Liberals spent eight years yelling at the tops of our lungs about the deficit, the wasteful war spending, the huge tax breaks to for the rich and everything else that created this deficit and now the Teabaggers are upset at the poor, who had nothing to do with creating this mess.

It's your party who cuts benefits for our troops, and sends them into battle, without decent equipment to protect themselves.

I can assure you, I have raised far more money for our troops, and time invested, than anyone on this forum!

The money for our troops, our first resoonders, both here, AND on the battle field, AND after they come home, is what Repiglicans vote AGainst, and also what YOU whine about!!!

Who do you call to put out the fires in your neighborhood?

Who teachers the kids in your state??

And where the heck do you think that equipment comes from? Do you think the government has manufacturing plants that make it? Or do they use those evil government contractors (Like Ed's company) to get it?

Do you ever have any consistency of thought? It seems like you just hate whatever it is that you are told to hate, but only when you are told to hate it.

Do you think that every federal contractor, is selling us something our troops need?

Have you ever heard of the Military Industrial Complex????

Do you have any clue what Eisenhower's warning was all about?

There is not a singloe one on this forum from the right, not a one, who has consistantly defended our troops, and condemned the Bush Administration, for the shabby way in which the Bush Administration, AND the RePiglican Party, treated them.

Your hatred, and determination to twist everything into a lie, speaks for itself.

WE ALL KNOW that Rumsfeld, THE WAR CRIMINAL, sent our people into battle, unequipped, without even decent helmets, while they were being blown up on the same streets, in the same way, for years!

It's the RePIGlicans, who vote agsint spending money for our troops, and first resonders, in our wars, and in our country's communities!

Did I say that all government contractors provide for the military, or did I say all military equipment comes from government contractors? Even YOU should be able to see the difference.

But, our oh so thrifty Repiglicans, fought tooth an nail, regardless, to spend/waste all those multi millions/billions...why, because they were to be made in a Repiglican's city.

As I say all the time, if the right would watch their government, live, for at least once in a while, it wouldn't take very long for them to realize why I call thtem REpiglicans~!

LOL, the point is that I have never demanded your tax information. All I have ever done was state what you were unwilling to do which is you hypocritically bash others for legally taking tax breaks while you do the same exact thing.

As far as bashing public workers, your sour attitude is causing you to be unable to coherently acknowledge what is actually posted, which is I have agreed with you that both our pay (at least in part for me) comes from tax revenue however it is about freaking time they start ponying up their own real money for HC. You can change the subject from now till the cows come home but that is the extent that I have said on this board. You really, as a friend, should take more effort in reading what I am actually posting instead of trying to twist it to meet your view of what you think I am posting.
