Why a budget deal will happen ...

First off, this isn't an endorsement of any plan I've seen.

That being said, the mid 90's budget deal happened because of a federal gubmint shut down ... when civilization didn't devolve into the predicted apocalypse, the two sides quickly struck a deal before the majority of the electorate figured out that the world continued pretty much as it had before.

This time, the great state of Minnesota is the canary in the coal mine.

We are in day 3 of the state shut down ... and chaos has not reigned.

I disagree.

Crazy won't take half-crazy as a compromise.

Even though there is no possible scenario where the debt won't go up (and a lot), to allow it to go up is going to take many trillions of dollars of supposed cuts, which are very bad policy.

I think the crazies have convinced their still-less-informed constituents that we really could balance the budget right now and forever, if only they stick to their crazy positions.

No compromise = no deal.
