There's the head rail and the foot rail. What is the reason they are each called that? sid

For identification.

What should we call them?

Thanks

To me the "foot" of anything, say a bed for instance, is at the end you face, and the head(headboard) is at the wall end. Why is a pool table bass-ackwards is my question. You rack on the foot spot and break from the head spot. Where is that logic? sid

The foot rail is the rail you kick when you miss. The head rail is the rail you bang your head against when you miss. Ask Fabio Petroni. (OK bad joke. Sorry, Fabio).

If anybody would know the origins of those names it would be Mike Shamos.

Just as a guess, the head side is where you start the game from, where your head is closest to when standing for the break shot.

The foot side would be its opposite. Works for me.
