FILIPINO aces Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante try to assert their superiority over Mika Immonen and Corey Deuel, respectively, on Tuesday when the Cafe Puro Challenge of the Masters opens at the Subic Bay Yacht Club in Zambales.
Reyes beat Immonen, the 2001 world pool champion, in the recent Challenge of Champions in Connecticut while Bustamante downed Deuel, the US Open titlist, in the World 9-Ball Challenge finals in Manila. "This is payback time," chorused Immonen and Deuel. "We are both playing well and hope to erase the memory of our last visit," said the duo, referring to the World 9-Ball Challenge where Immonen failed to land in the semis.

Immonen is determined to clinch the 50,000-dollar winner-take-all tournament.

He arrived last week to "get the feel of the conditions and to practice with many of the great pool players in the Philippines."

He thanked Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority chairman Felicito Payumo for hosting the four-day event.

"Subic is a wonderful place with very friendly people. I'm going to enjoy my stay here," Immonen said.

The Bustamante-Deuel and Reyes-Immonen matches, both best-of-three sets, will be telecast over Viva Vintage Sports-IBC 13 starting at 6 p.m.
