ABC News’ Michael Ono reports:

The Department of Justice is reviewing, and has the power to reject a controversial new law passed in South Carolina that requires a registered voter to present a government -issued photo ID before his or her vote is counted.

Gov. Nikki Haley signed the bill into law in May and she’s not alone. Four other states have passed similar voter ID laws in 2011, including Wisconsin, Texas, Tennessee and Kansas. But thanks to the DOJ, South Carolina’s law could still be rejected by federal officials.

And while other states have passed voter photo ID laws in the past, the laws passed in 2011 are by far the strictest with the exception of the law passed in 2005 by the state of Indiana.

Section 5 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act empowers the DOJ to review election laws passed in select southern sates as well as Alaska and some counties throughout the country. Crafted in a time of great racial strife, the act was meant to codify the power of the 15th Amendment, which forbids racial discrimination at the polling booth.

South Carolina, which is subject to federal review, is the only state to have petitioned the Obama Justice Department for approval while other states such as Texas opted to clear their law through the D.C. District Court, which is also permitted.

Critics of a stricter photo ID law argue that the requirement will make it tougher for poor and minority voters to cast their ballot while proponents call it a common sense provision.

If you agree with voter ID then the state should ensure that everyone gets one BEFORE an election...free of charge.

Why should the state ensure everyone gets one? Should they point a gun at their head and march them down to pick theirs up?

Why did you avoid my question?

LOL, I just checked the state of South Carolina and their state issued ID costs $5. I guess you could spin this as class warfare instead of your normal race baiting since there are poor people who cannot afford the $5. Now on to the issue of it being free. Who would pay for all the administrative costs of procuring the material and machines to make these ID cards, pay for the government employees making the IDs/issuing the IDs, pay for the electricity and other utilities that might be involved in the creation/issuance of these IDs?

Do you think these ID's are somehow created out of thin air? Maybe they should just raise taxes to pay for these and then only those under the poverty line would get them for free and everyone else can pay (since you really don't want everyone to get one for free).

Just more efforts by the REpiglicans to disenfranchise Dem voters.

They have an undeniable history of these tactics, as was written about by one of their operatives, who when released from JAIL, wrote the book, How to throw An Election: PROOF, that they do these things, regularly, as admitted by the crook who jammed the telephone lines in Ohio, at the request of Repiglican Leaders....for money....PIGS!

Ask Katherine Harris and Tom Delay.

You're uneducable.

When you get on here and admit that Valarie Plame was a covert, SECRET, CIA NOC Agent, Specialist in WMD, I'll consider you worthy of bothering to provide you with documentation.

Till then, educate yourself.

You posted a link implying that it was.

But ... I have an unfair advantage over you in that I actually read the link.

I am asking you. By requiring a voter (Rep and Dem) to show proof of identity how does that disenfranchise on the Dems? I am educable and you are just an ignorant that throws out a millions lies and waits for one to stick.

In OHIO (http://www.dmv.org/oh-ohio/id-cards.php) it costs $8.50.

It's GOOD FOR (http://bmv.ohio.gov/state_id_card.stm) 4 years.

That works out to $2.125 per year ... or $0.177 per month.

A state ID card is a requirement for welfare benefits and for having a job.

Anyone who does not have a valid state ID card can be assumed to be a likely illegal.
