U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton said Friday he needed to take action in an effort to stop what he called an “awful” situation.

He has held the International Longshore and Warehouse Union in contempt for blocking a train earlier this month and a protest at a grain terminal that caused damages.

The National Labor Relations Board had asked court to fine the union more than $290,000 to cover damages and other expenses. Leighton says he rounded down to be cautious and ordered additional penalties for future violations. </div></div>

The port authority and the union charge that the ILWU contractually has the right to represent dock workers at the port.</span></div></div>

So not only does the Port authority agree with the unions chief complaint, it has joined the union in a federal lawsuit to change what EGT is doing.

The judge had entered a TRO to prevent the union from putting out their picket line and closing down the port operations. The union disobeyed the TRO, and this award is the contempt award for that violation.

Any actual provable violence or vandalism would lead to criminal charges, and there is no evidence of the former, nor criminal proceedings filed as of this time.
