The world is getting warmer, countering the doubts of climate change sceptics about the validity of some of the scientific evidence, according to the most comprehensive independent review of historical temperature records to date.

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, found several key issues that sceptics claim can skew global warming figures had no meaningful effect.

The Berkeley Earth project compiled more than a billion temperature records dating back to the 1800s from 15 sources around the world and found that the average global land temperature has risen by around 1C since the mid-1950s.

This figure agrees with the estimate arrived at by major groups that maintain official records on the world's climate, including Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), and the Met Office's Hadley Centre, with the University of East Anglia, in the UK.

"My hope is that this will win over those people who are properly sceptical," Richard Muller, a physicist and head of the project, said </div></div>

Actually, that this formerly lionized skeptic has now published his own data analysis showing strong agreement with the temperature increases should NOT impact global climate change skeptics. It's comical that it does.

The stronger position for the skeptics is to drop their denials that the temperature has been increasing, and while instead admitting that it has (and at an increasing rate of increase), continue to attack the notion that the increase is anthropogenic. Such an attack may be wrong, but it continues to be defensible.

However, the skeptics doubled down on their position, to try to deny that the increases have been occurring, claiming a maximalist skeptic position that even the apparent temperature increases are due to falsified science and a concerted hoax among the scientists.

So, hilariously, the skeptics now take a big hit when the track of the temperature increases published by the mainstream climatologists is confirmed by an erstwhile leading skeptic of that data, even though they shouldn't. They shouldn't, but have made this bed for themselves that they are now forced to 'lie' in.

The planet is warming, that's a fact.

Is it us that's causing it?

That's the Q.

IMO, all the data shows that its us. The major polluters want to deny this fact because saving the planet will reduce their profit.

Short term thinking rules, just look at the banks.

It sort of looks like a hockey stick to me.
But if it iz korrekt that there are a number of temporary faktors at work at prezent causing global kooling, then when theze cease, the end of the stick might turn up higher and over and around and it will look like a sleigh. But what good iz a sleigh if there aint no snow.

I agree, but the deniers took their talking points too seriously and too far, so as to deny the very warming itself occurring.

It's typical of illogical persons, or games of 'telephone.'

The first talking point was uncertainty, that it wasn't PROVEN that humans were causing global warming. (Cf: the similar attack on behalf of the tobacco industry based on the claim that there was no PROOF that tobacco caused harm or injury.) That turned into something quite different, that it was proven that no global warming was occurring.
