A member of AZB states that he received the following email this morning from Matchroom Sports.....

7th November

2011 Mosconi Cup Latest

Williams Named as USA Skipper

CHARLIE WILLIAMS will captain the USA team at the 18th annual PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup which takes place at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 8th to 11th December.

It will be Williams’ debut as a captain although he has played in the event five times (2001-2005) and been victorious on four occasions. He sports a playing record of 12 wins from 21 matches.

In his capacity of head of Dragon Promotions, Williams has had great success coaching individual players over the past few years and coupled with his experience as a competitor in the event, it was felt that he was the man to revive American fortunes after last year’s defeat.

"I am undeniably thrilled to be chosen to captain this USA Mosconi Cup team. I've been on the team as a player five times, but in many ways this is even more of an honor,” said Williams.

“The Europeans no doubt have a solid team with Darren, Niels, Ralf, Nick and Chris, but when I look at our roster with Rodney, Shane, Johnny, Shawn, and Mike I honestly feel we are more than their match.

“Of course anything can happen in the Cup, but you have to believe in your team and I can't help but really believe in this one," he added.

Williams’ job will be to gather his side in Las Vegas, put them through their paces in the build-up and then guide the team through often choppy waters once play gets underway at 11am on Thursday 8th December.

Commented Rodney Morris, who will be making his eighth appearance in Vegas; “Charlie will make a good captain. He’s helped me with my game recently, he's a good motivator, and has played in Mosconi before, so he's very familiar with the team concept.”

Johnny Archer added, “I think Charlie will bring his coaching skills to Team USA and I look forward to going after Team Europe with Charlie at the head of the team.”

Williams is under no illusions as to what he will be up against.

"Team Europe will be a challenge, of that there is no doubt and their captain Johan Ruijsink has a strong, systematic approach with his players. He is a full-time professional Olympic-recognized coach, and he is undefeated in three Mosconi Cups.

“As a professional coach myself, I've worked with many of the world's greatest players and I understand the value of great coaching and definitely won't underestimate Europe's team or captain.
“This is why I feel Team USA deserve the same kind of fortitude and attention and my plan is to give that to them. Our USA boys this year are a close knit group that love and care about each other off and on the table and that's going to shine through in Vegas.
"These guys all know how to play already. I'm just here to try to help them get the most out of themselves and I'll do whatever the task needs of me to accomplish that".

No Earl?

Earl threw a hissy fit at the last one. Someone showed a clip of Earl losing a game, and thats all it took.

IIRC, Earl wasn't on the team last year and the last few times he was on the team he did not earn the spot, he was picked by the organizers.
From what I have read, his behavior has been so bad that he will not be on the team again unless he earns it, as it should be.

IMHO, the naming of CW as Captain of Team USA will cause a lot of Americans to root for Team Euro.

Can someone bring me up to speed as to who Charlie Williams is? I think I saw him play in some televised event in 2008-09? I think I remember them saying he has a great break but what has he said, not said, done, or not done?

For the most part, I'm wondering why :
A)Nick Varner isn't captain again, and
B)Why Charlie Williams ?

What prompted the change ?

Don't know. Maybe a sign of solidarity between Matchroom and Dragon (Luke and Charlie).

The one thing for sure is that Charlie wasn't the popular choice.
Some people on another forum think it is Luke's way of undermining the USA team.

I think that would only be the case if the USA team were strongly resistant to the appointment. We don't know how they feel about the choice. Maybe they're fine with it.

As professionals, I would hope that the team plays their best in spite of their feelings for the captain and I hope they win.
We may never really know how the different players feel about their captain.

If not Charlie - then who?

He is just as good as anyone else to be captain. He always has worked hard to highlight the pros so it is time he get some recognition. Besides, what does a captain do besides pairing up the players. I think they will have a lot of input as to who will be partners.

The players don't need any motivation. They all know what is expected of them. Once they get on the table nothing else matters.

It is Charlie's turn.

I would have to second calm and cool Nick Varner. He's got the most experience, best resume. Level headed, known as a gentleman with no known skeletons in his closet.

Just off of the top of my head, Nick Varner and Kim Davenport come to mind. I'm sure there are others if I think about it.

This article is pretty cool, it explains a little about how people were chosen for the team:

Rodney is a favorite of Matchroom. I don't have the stats on how many years in a row he was picked regardless of his rank, but it's a lot.

Saying that they picked the top 5 is an 'after the fact' type of remark. They made it clear that Rodney and Johnny were their wild card picks. If Rodney finished lower than 5th, they wouldn't be saying they went with the top 5.

I'm not sure what they meant by saying that Hatch just missed the cut by finishing 6th, since the only automatic spots were the top 3.

If I understand it correctly, Hatch was in line to get the slot before Putnam unexpectely won a few matches late in the U.S. Open. Those matches gave him more points than Hatch.

As you said, I'm not sure what they would have done if Hatch finished higher than Archer and Morris. More than likely, they would have been the Wild Cards and hatch would have still been out.

The more I think about this, the more I think there shouldnt be a captain. Let there be a coach instead, one who doesnt play but calls certain shots for the team. That would open up a wider selection of veterans to represent the USA. Hopkins comes to mind.

IIRC, the "captain" does not play so he could be a "coach" as you suggest.

I'm confused. I just read that Charlie Williams is representing Korea in the World Mixed Doubles Championships. Should players be switching around like that?

I say we be fair about this and send Charlie to Korea. He can represent them from now on. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Charlie was born in Korea. That probably gives him dual citizenship.

Anyone know why John Schmidt was not in the running? And does anyone think the top 5 could have been stronger, regardless of the standings? Who would you have chosen?

I like SVB, Archer, Rodney, Schmidt and Cory. (I love earl but he's too risky to represent.)

The top 3 are set in stone. If they qualify, they get in. It's the next two spots that are totally subjective.

You would have to get inside Luke Riches' head to figure out how he picks those players, including the team captain. I have some ideas, but I won't publically speculate.

I kind of like the way they select all stars in baseball. The fans vote, so its not always the guys with better stats that get voted in. Poor selections do happen, like any other public election.....but at least majority rules.

No Asians on Team Europe, so maybe not any direct conflict with the Mosconi Cup teams. Unless they eventually pick up Huidji See (allegedly from the Netherlands?!?!) in another year, or unless a 'German' like Bustey were put on the team (has that ever happened, btw?).

I know you weren't talking about conflicts, as much as switching allegiances apparently back and forth, but I don't mind the latter very much, especially if they STAY switched (in that area). So, for example, when a Sang Lee came here from S. Korea, that was all good, since he never switched back.
