Alleged gunman’s GOP pal
The neo-Nazi who allegedly killed five people Wednesday was once praised as a "true patriot" by Russell Pearce

Less than a month after Russell Pearce crowed at a Gilbert, Ariz., Tea Party meeting that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s “immigration policy is identical to mine” — a brash claim that Republican operatives scrambled to explain — the self-proclaimed Tea Party president and architect of Arizona’s punitive immigration law might now be scrambling himself. Pearce has previously praised J.T. Ready, the alleged gunman in Wednesday’s tragic killing of five people in the same Phoenix suburb.

In 2006, Pearce told an interviewer on a video that emerged last year that he also considered Ready to be a “true patriot, to the real purpose, the limited purpose, to the Republican platform that we have.”

According to news reports, Wednesday’s victims included Ready’s apparent girlfriend, two others adults and a child, along with Ready’s apparent suicide, and was most likely connected to a domestic dispute.

While Ready, a neo-Nazi activist, might have made more headlines for his “U.S. Border Guard” and defiantly white supremacist tirades against immigrants from Mexico, his shadowy connections to Pearce and others in Arizona’s extremist political circles remain troubling. Earlier this spring, Ready had announced his intention to run for sheriff of Pinal County, on the outskirts of Phoenix.

Ready possessed an undeniable showmanship and proclivity for attracting media attention to Arizona’s immigration crisis. He had been court-martialed twice from the military, yet still managed to invoke the veteran tag until he was stripped of his role as master of ceremonies for a Veteran’s Day parade in Mesa. That didn’t stop Ready from making a failed bid for the Mesa City Council, or gaining a spot as a precinct committeeman for the Republican Party in 2008.

Thanks to Phoenix New Times’ Stephen Lemons’ indefatigable muckraking over several years, we know how Ready involved himself with the National Socialist Movement and nativist border groups while maintaining a relationship with Pearce. In fact, Pearce had taken part in Ready’s baptism in the Mormon Church and ordained him as an elder in the Melchizedek priesthood.

Despite the mounting evidence, Pearce denied association with Ready and emailed Lemons in response to the “true patriot” video in the winter of 2011: “No one could have known or guessed he would later become involved with radical hate groups.”

However, the Anti-Defamation League in Phoenix had already warned Pearce about Ready’s Nazi activities in 2006. A year later, local media began to report on Ready’s white supremacist affiliations after a legislative hearing. At an anti-immigrant rally in Phoenix in the summer of 2007, Pearce had watched admiringly as Ready wooed the crowd.

In the end, it was Ready who felt betrayed by Pearce’s political maneuvers. “He’s supposed to be a lawman,” Ready charged in a taped interview with Phoenix videographer Dennis Gilman, after Pearce closed the door on their relationship due to all of the media attention, “but he has a pattern of criminality.”

“He is the worst kind of racist,” Ready referred to Pearce in a New Times interview in the fall of 2010. “One who will do anything to achieve power, then trample on our rights like a tyrant when he gets that power.

Ready added, “I christen him Grand Wizard of the AZ Senate!”

Ready’s connections are not just limited to Pearce. State legislator Sylvia Allen introduced a bill this spring for Arizona to fund and arm its own border militia, which was arguably modeled on Ready’s controversial militia antics that won national media-coverage.

As national debate raged over SB 1070 in the summer of 2010, Ready announced his militia initiative on his “white supremacist New Saxon site, inviting participants to “bring plenty of firearms and ammo.” Ready admonished: “Camouflage or earth tone clothing [is] preferred…Bandanas, balaclavas, or other identity concealing items are permissible and encouraged.” He declared: “This is the Minuteman Project on steroids! THE INVASION STOPS HERE!”

Two weeks ago, armed apparent militia activists in camouflage ambushed and killed two undocumented migrants in an incident that remains unsolved.

Regardless of any connection he may have had to that attack, Ready has brought another bitter chapter of death to the border state’s headlines.

A border militia leader on Wednesday shot and killed four people at a Gilbert home, including a toddler, before committing suicide, sources said.

Sources identified the shooter as Jason "J.T." Ready, a reputed neo-Nazi who made headlines when he launched a militia movement to patrol the Arizona desert to hunt for illegal immigrants and drug smugglers.

Gilbert shooting leaves 5 dead

Authorities have not identified the other victims, but reached by phone Wednesday afternoon, Hugo Mederos said the victims were his ex-wife, Lisa; their daughter, Amber; Amber's boyfriend, whose name The Republic is withholding until his next of kin could be notified, and Amber's 18-month-old baby, Lilly.

Mederos, who lives in Tampa, said Ready lived at the home with his girlfriend, Lisa.

Ready was a former Marine who headed the U.S. Border Guard, a militia-style group that routinely performed armed patrols in the southern Arizona desert. Early this year, Ready had formed an exploratory committee for a run as Pinal County sheriff.

In a statement of organization filed Jan. 11, Amber Mederos was listed as treasurer of the Committee to Elect J.T. Ready. Her name was nowhere to be found in amended paperwork filed March 12.

Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Bill Balafas said the gunman's motives is unknown. Authorities recovered two handguns and a shotgun from the scene, Balafas said.

Members of the anti-terrorism task force are at the scene and providing personnel to the Gilbert Police Department, according to an FBI spokesman.

Gilbert Fire Department's hazmat team went to check on the two 55-gallon drums found on the property and determined they do not represent an immediate threat. But the bomb squad encountered munitions in the house, and a decision was made to bring in federal agents to remove them and treat them as evidence.

The shootings occurred sometime after 1 p.m. in a residential area in the 500 block of West Tumbleweed Road, near Warner and Cooper roads.

Balafas said the youngest victim was taken from the scene to Maricopa Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

"There were signs of life, that's why we transported her," Balafas said. "This is a domestic situation. We do have a witness that our investigators are interviewing."

Balafas said the witness saw at least part of the incident.

DeAnn Rawson, 38, who has lived in the Lago Estancia neighborhood for 13 years, said she was "sick to my stomach, as you can tell everyone driving by is absolutely shocked."

Rawson stood on a street corner and answered drivers who rolled down their windows to ask what happened.

"I would have come and got her," Rawson said of the youngest victim. "It makes me mad. I can't have children, and you have other people doing things that are insane."

Gary Davis, who also lives in the neighborhood, stood outside Wednesday afternoon, watching the commotion.

"There's no excuse for taking a child's life," Davis said. "Nothing ever happens in this neighborhood. It's a shock to us."

Mesquite Junior High School, along with nearby Gilbert Elementary School, was placed on "modified lockdown" status -- meaning classes go on as normal, but students are not allowed to leave and no one is allowed to enter the building --- until 2 p.m.

Witnesses in the neighborhood said a SWAT team sealed off part of the area and that investigators told residents to remain indoors.

Nearly an hour after the shootings occurred, police were milling around the neighborhood of stucco homes with red-tile roofs. Police tape cordoned off three separate areas of Tumbleweed Road.

Republic reporter JJ Hensley contributed to the article.

By using the left's own logic ... Obama backed Byrd and Byrd was. Klansman, therefor Obama supports the Klan.

Byrd stopped his involvement with the Klan some 9 years prior to running for the House, and then after 18 total years had passed during which Byrd wasn't involved with the Klan, Obama was born. Then another approximately 45 years or so transpired before Obama could have possibly had any involvement with Byrd.

So, a slight problem with the timeline of your combo timing shot, involving a lapse of 63 years (or more). Those timing shots are tricky, indeed!

Funny thing is the Neo Nazi extremists existed long before the Tea Party came along.

And when the Tea Party did come along, the Neo Nazi extremists were an obvious segment of the organization.

Quite right, there.

The Tea Party movement didn't create neo-Nazis. It just attracted them into its midst.

eg8r </div></div>Actually, EH8R, you either;

1. Cannot read,

2. Pretend to misread everything in order to irritate others. Or;

3. Love to irritate and agitate other posters so much, that you simply distort and intentionally twist everything into some unrecognizable BS, ALSO for the sake of attacking and annoying others, that thing you so love to do... refer to things that never happened as though they were real....ie.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> you people wanted to discount all of Obama's commie buddies and crazy pastor </div></div>

The president didn't have any commie buddies, and he condemned the pastor's language himself, AFTER he learned of it, and had never been [present to hear it spoken, as was proven.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">you have no problem trying to attach wacko murderers to the tea party. </div></div>

I don't have to 'Try' because the fact is, the Tea Party murderer was a Tea Party Leader in his state, and had been for years previous, and had been supported by his very close friend, a Republican Representative. Those are the FACTS!

More proof that you either cannot read, or simply love to stir the pot ....

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Does your hypocrisy have a "low"?

Truth be told, hypocrisy is your own forte'....as all of your posts prove on a daily basis.

Your M.O. of flipping reality, and insisting constantly that the facts are something other than what documentation proves, is notorious on this forum.

There is so much RW BS blown away on this forum by knowledgable lefties here, I marvel at their patience!

You have two posts in this thread.

Neither of them address the subject.

Neither of them add to this discussion.

Both of them are intended to distort the documentation that I posted.

The fact is, an AZ Republican NEO-NAZI MORMON Tea Party Leader, killed himself and others.

Just another link to the irration psychological make-up of the kind of people which the Souther Poverty Law Center, and other organizations of equal credibility, have been warning us about, and whose thoughtful reports, are bashed annd denied, by the Republican Party, which has aleigned itself with the radicals in our society, defends and fails to speak against, even tought their signage, guns at events, threats of violence, continue to grow.

The Republican party is the party of irrational zealots, racists, homophobes, misogynists, sexists and anti-American philosophies.

Your first post was just your usual. An attempt to throw the entire thread off subject, by using personal attacks, and untrue statements.

And if you don't do it first, you just chime in with the others who are doing the same thing, and do it relentlessly.

Do you call that debating like an adult, with intelligence?

That's all we ever get from you.
