GOP Oversight Chair Admits There Is No Evidence Of White House Involvement In Fast And Furious

ThinkProgress (http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/06/24/505180/gop-oversight-chair-admits-there-is-no-evidence-of-white-house-involvement-in-fast-and-furious/)

http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Issa-Holder-Hearings-e1340546101551.jpg

Last week, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) claimed that the White House decision to invoke executive privilege to prevent the release of some documents related to the “Fast and Furious” investigation indicated some sort of admission of a White House cover-up. Today, pressed by Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) admitted that there is absolutely no evidence to back up Boehner’s allegation:

WALLACE: Do you have any evidence that White House officials were involved in these decisions, that they knowingly misled Congress, and are involved in a cover-up?

ISSA: No, we don’t. And what we are seeking are documents that we know to exist, February 4 to December [2011] that are in fact about [murdered Border Patrol agent] Brian Terry’s murder, who knew, and why people were lying about it…

WALLACE: I want to be clear, because we’ve got to get out, no evidence that the White House is involved in the cover up?

ISSA: And I hope they don’t get involved.

Watch the video: YouTube (http://youtu.be/m2NBnXKEVNw)

Given that Boehner was first elected to Congress in 1990, he should certainly know better than to infer that “executive privilege” has to involve White House officials. Every administration over his lengthy Congressional tenure has asserted “deliberative process privilege” and as recently as 2008, Bush administration Attorney General Michael Mukasey rejected (http://www.fas.org/sgp/bush/ag071508.pdf) congressional subpoenas for reports of Department of Justice interviews with the White House staff regarding the Valerie Plame Wilson identify leak investigation citing the same privilege.

Holder is the man who ended the program. The Bush Administration started this whole mess.

Yes, times have changed, since the NRA has been a main stay of the Repuglican Party, virtually bribing them in order to fill this country up with assault weapons, and paying off Republicans for irrational, Stand Your Ground laws, which are linked to a rise in gun deaths in the states which have passed them. Not to mention all of the total nutjobs, who cann go to a gun show, and buy assault weapons, without being asked so much as one question! I've seen the videos.

And what happened to the big NRA Gun Promotional BS, Guns don't kill people, people kill people? That's all changed now?

As for this latest disreputable Republican political witch hunt, we've all seen it before, it's what they always do, when they don't have enough power to suit them.

Republicans had no problem at all, treating the families of the 9/11 victims like dirt, because they wanted to know how such a horrendous attack, with multiple warnings, specific warnings directly to George Bush, from our CIA and counter terrorist specialists, could have been so completely ignored, and how in the world, all of those innocent Americans, could have died as a result.

Bush tried to use is power to prevent that investigation, even cut off the funding! Republicans backed him up all the way!

Republicans didn't want to know a damn thing about 9/11 though, did they!

In fact, we now know why! Now it is documented.

As for vietnam, I was against that war from the very start, just as I am against all wars, unless our homeland is at risk.

Just as I am against gun laws so laxed that mentally ill people, and people with a criminal record, formally involved in violence, can buy guns at gun shows, stop by Walmart, and get all of the clips they need to go mow down hundreds of innocent people, in minutes!

There is never anything moral, about Republicans, or their policies. They are using FEAR, for political purposes, as they always do, trying to make people think that president Obama is going to take away their second amendment rights, a big lie, of course, and that is all this witch hunt is about!

Too bad their supporters are so dumb, they probably don't even know that the last president who supported tightened restrictions on guns, was their hero, Ronald Reagan, who was all for the Jim Brady Act.

The real reason the GOP went after Holder has nothing to do with Mexicans or border agents, and everything to do with DOJ investigations into voter suppression, DOJ investigations and actions on immigration issues, and DOJ investigations regarding Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sherrif's Dept.

Isaa and Boehner were, and are, simply on a witch hunt for political purposes, just another lame attempt at smearing the Obama administration.

Chris Wallace, virtually alone among the Fox hosts, does ask tough questions of Republicans at times. Which is why his Sunday show is one of two Fox shows I tape and watch regularly.

However, and on this rare Fox show I do have personal and frequent knowledge week to week, he also takes the Fox/Republican line often, and the panel is always quite skewed with GOP propagandists and water-carriers.

He's more the exception that proves the rule, and he's not always an exception, either. Yes, and kudos, he is a cut above (several cuts above) their normal GOP homer broadcasts, even as he is also a homer in the end.

Honorable mention to Shep Smith as well, I suppose, although I don't seen enough of him to really evaluate just how far off the Fox propaganda reservation he strays as a general matter.

Guns, like money, are fungible.

I haven't heard that 3 agents are dead due to this operation. I've heard of one, for whom there is no evidence those guns were used in his murder. Evidently as no one brings up the other two you claim, there is still less evidence than zero to claim a relationship.

300 Mexicans? Even if they were killed with such weapons provably traced to this operation (which evidence I haven't seen either), are you claiming the cartels had no other guns with which to kill these people?

If they had ample weapons before F&F weapons, in what way did extra guns get these people more dead than they would have been without them?

There is an international market in guns, open to anyone with money. Drug dealers have a lot of money. They probably got their own straw buyers to use the gun shop and gun show loopholes to get untraceable unreported weapon buys quite apart from F&F operation, and/or had ample ability to get AK-47s or whatever long arms they preferred from the open international market.

Well, I do not think anyone would call Randi Rhoads anything other than a Democratic supporter, even if she at one time on air said she could say a lot about Hillary, except she was worried she might be killed.

That Fox allows ONE HOUR out of 40 a week to stray sometimes from their party line/top down daily fax talking points equally doesn't change how they are, in the main. Especially when you find that one guy in that one hour also spouting their talking points, except on occasion.

There is such a thing as protective camouflage, and either Fox for its own purposes, or Wallace for his own pretense of integrity, seems to use it well. Bill O'Reilly also on occasion takes a sensible position, for the same reason (his branding).

Still hacks.

As Chairman Issa has even more ruined his reputation by having all the information of the Fortune Magazine article that refutes his entire presentation and alleged whistle-blower, while hiding it from the record in one-sided hearings at which no Democratic witnesses were allowed, frankly there is no reason to take his selective partial quotations to mean a thing.

His revealing of his self-selected portions of these sealed documents would be a crime, except for the plenary immunity members of Congress enjoy as to speech from the Congress.

Democratic members do not wish to commit such crimes, but by their own review of what he's acquired, they state the refutation is in those same wire-taps when taken as a whole.

Given Issa's own past proven perfidy, that must remain the final word at this point.

I'm saying, and cite other House members for this, that once again, Issa has released what appear to be damning excerpts, while leaving out of view the exculpatory excerpts he also has.

As he did before.

He has no currency of credibility left to spend. One cannot take anything he alone says, or produces by massaging the evidentiary record, at face value. He has no credibility.

Unfortunately, unless others wish to violate the law with their get out of jail free card, no one else can lawfully put up what he's left out, if they even have access to it.
