To buy Mitt Romney’s logic of the past few days is to accept the notion that bigotry, specifically religious bigotry, is one of those “American values” no U.S. diplomat under siege should ever “apologize” for.

Fact is, no State Department employee in either Cairo or Benghazi ever actually “apologized” for the anti-Muslim YouTube screed that helped trigger this tragic Middle East conflagration. Yes, they condemned the film for the blasphemy it was and regretted some would exercise their First Amendment right in such a vile and irresponsible way.

But maybe you have to be a senator like John Kerry, who’s wrestled with foreign policy for 25 years, or a former diplomat like Boston’s the Rev. Charles Stith, to understand the difference between diplomacy and politics.

“I think Gov. Romney’s response to this tragedy was sad,” Kerry told me yesterday. “These are moments when ambition and politics need to be checked at the door. You don’t use everything as a chance to score political points.

“You don’t rush out to win a news cycle before you know the facts,” Kerry added, “before families have even been notified. It’s callous and just sad.

“Mitt Romney should have stood up like a president and said, ‘This is a dangerous part of the world, and Ambassador Chris Stevens gave his life helping Libyans to be free.’ That’s what a president says.”

That view was shared by Charles R. Stith, who is currently the director of the African Presidential Archives and Research Center at Boston University and left Boston to become U.S. ambassador to Tanzania in the tumultuous years between 1998 and 2001.

“Given how high the stakes are now, and going back before 9/11 to the 1998 bombing of our African embassies,” Stith said, “I can tell you sound bite diplomacy is never what you want to engage in. People can lose their lives. At the end of the day what you have to remember is that a diplomatic mission is not a military installation.

“As a human being,” Stith said, “your gut instinct will always be to lash out in kind. But when you are in the middle of a diplomatic situation as tense and as volatile as what we’ve witnessed, the mature, diplomatic approach is that you do not go with your first response. Rather, you must seek out the most appropriate response to get to where you want to be.”

Like Kerry, Stith said he found Romney’s remarks to be “inappropriate and unfortunate at every level. I know how courageous these folks who staff our embassies are,” Stith said. “I was particularly upset at the shot Romney took at our embassy personnel.

“Every crisis we face cannot be sifted through a political lens,” he said. “We have to take a step back and be something more than mere political animals. We have to be patriots.”

Romney is using the typical Republican deceit to Cover his ass and to muddy up the waters, spin and cover up his own screw up.

The first statement from the Embassy was clearly an immediate effort by those in the Embassy, who were at risk, due to this idiotic Right wing radical "Christian" movie, as they tried to undo the damage done by the Radical Religious RWers involved with that movie, for the sake of their own safety.

People at the State department have confirmed that in those cases, there is no requirement for clearing those statements with the state department, or with anyone else in advance, and no contact had occured at the time the statement was originally released.

At the time those at the Embassy issued that message, which was obviously their own decision, in what they thought was their own interest for their own safety, it was the right message, at the right time, by the right people.

Enter MItt the TWIT, actually jumping in at a time when any knowledgable foreign policy savvy Government Representative knows that you stay quiet when our people are trying to quell any increasing threat or possibility of a threat of violence, hence, he was condemning in advance, those who ended up dead, heroes, who died in the interest of serving our country, and the world.

The FACT that the original statement, which was entirely appropriate at the time the Americans IN THE EMBASSY ISSUED THE STATEMENT, was removed by our State Department, once they got word of the violence which followed, was also appropriate, but also by no means indicated that the original statement by those at the Embassy, was inappropriate, as Romney is spinning, and that spin is another LIE.

Hence, Romney lied, and then he lied about his lie, which every rightie on this forum who PRETENDS to care about our American HEROES, is now also lying about!

How disgusting!

They are doing the same disgusting thing that Romney did, and in that process, they are supporting the totally UNAMERICAN behvior of POS MITT!

They are applying the same disgusting spin, denial, and further lies, which he is spewing. They are justifying and supporting his disgraceful behavior, and promoting his shameful lies.

A total disgrace!

A totally SHAMEFUL reaction to Romney's vicious lies, which even Republicans are calling completely STUPID, SHAMEFUL, AND CARELESS.

To me this entire fiasco is proof that the irrational Right of the Republican Party, (now a greater percentage of the Republican party than ever before) in this country are as big a threat to peace and a danger to America, as al Qaeda and the Taliban.

I am thankful that many Americans see through this scam.

I don't think I have ever been more ashamed of, and disgusted with the Republican supporters on this forum, as I am today, except for the time when they attack our President for killing the world's most dangerous threat, OBL.....which was another time when PATRIOTIC Americans of all political persuasions SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COME TOGETHER!
