Senate Republicans prevented a veterans’ jobs bill from coming to a vote today by forcing a budget point of order vote. Democrats came up 2 votes short of the 60 needed to defeat the GOP’s budget measure.

The Veterans Jobs Corps bill — which is part of President Obama’s push to secure jobs for veterans — would have provided $1 billion over five years to hire 20,000 young veterans for public lands jobs and prioritize vets for first responder jobs such as police, firefighter, or EMT. The measure would have also provided young vets access to the infrastructure with which to assist in job searches, such as access to computers, internet and career services advisers.

The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a vets group that supported the legislation, called the GOP move “a huge disappointment,” adding, “Today, politics won over helping vets.”

While only five Republicans voted with the Democrats to waive the GOP budget point of order measure, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) led the GOP opposition. “When we find ourselves in $16 trillion of debt and we pay for a five-year bill over 10 years, we make the problem worse,” he said.

However, Veterans Jobs Corps bill co-sponsor Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) said on the Senate floor today that “this bill is fully paid for and does not violate pay-go rules.” (The New York Times said Murray’s aides say “say the program will be paid for by recovering more money from tax-delinquent Medicare providers and forcing big tax deadbeats to pay up before receiving passports.”)

Murray even tried to include most of the provisions of a competing Republican bill but Democrats still ran into opposition. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said he would block the measure until the Pakistani doctor that aided the CIA in looking for Osama bin Laden was freed, while Coburn claimed the bill would have no chance of passing the House so it wasn’t worth the effort.

“I’ve been surprised at the many obstacles and weird arguments that have been thrown at us,” Murray told the Washington Post.

The jobless rate for Iraq and Afghanistan war vets, while steadily declining, is still higher than the national average, yet congressional Republicans remain “resolute in their commitment to deny the Democrats anything that looks like an accomplishment in an election year.”

In an editorial last weekend referring to today’s vote, the New York Times said, “We’ll know then whether good sense prevailed, or the wheels have come completely off the Congressional machine.” It looks like the Republicans have made sure of the latter.

It is absolutely NOT paid for. Her best chance at paying the bill is getting the IRS to do something they have already chosen not to do. Maybe Murray thinks we could pay for Obamacare if Obama was left in office and given the opportunity to appoint more tax deadbeats to his administration. That way we could just force them into paying off their taxes.

If you want to say something is paid for then have the freaking money in your hand to pay for it. That goes for all politicians not just the current one opening their mouth and lying about how yet another bill will go unpaid and down the line look to the rich to cover the losses.

Who Could Oppose a Jobs Bill for Veterans?

Congressional Republicans, resolute in their commitment to deny the Democrats anything that looks like an accomplishment in an election year, have spent the week obstructing passage of the Veterans Job Corps Act of 2012. It’s a perfectly inoffensive bill from Senator Patty Murray, the Washington Democrat, meant to increase hiring and job training for veterans, especially those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Who could oppose hiring more veterans as cops, firefighters and national-parks workers? Who could be against helping veterans apply their military training to earn civilian occupational licenses? The unemployment rate for new veterans hit nearly 11 percent in August, compared with 8.1 percent nationwide. Veterans and active-duty soldiers are committing suicide at alarming rates. The men and women who defend America in uniform are 1 percent of the population. Why shouldn’t the 99 percent give them a hand?

I’ll let the Republicans explain.

Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma says it is dishonorable and cowardly to help veterans find jobs when there are more important things (what?) to do. Perhaps forgetting where he worked, he denounced the legislation on Wednesday as a “political exercise” and a waste of time, since the House wasn’t going to pass it anyway. (If that’s going to be the standard, the Senate might as well shut off the utilities.)

“Where is our honor? Where is our valor? Where is our sacrifice?” thundered Mr. Coburn, immediately after suggesting that the bill cost too much.

[ The Veterans Jobs Corps bill — which is part of President Obama’s push to secure jobs for veterans — would have provided $1 billion over five years to hire 20,000 young veterans ]

Rand Paul of Kentucky went further, saying he would block the bill until Pakistan freed Shakil Afridi, the doctor who helped the United States find Osama bin Laden. He also wants to halt all American aid to Pakistan until Dr. Afridi is released. If that halts American aid to veterans, too bad.

“I care deeply about the veterans . I care deeply about housing and helping the veterans who have fought for their country. But this is about whether we as a country and the American taxpayers will be asked to send good money after bad to allies that are not acting like allies.”

It’s only “about” that because of Mr. Paul. This ought to be about jobs for veterans.

Ms. Murray has not managed to open the Pakistani prison cell, but she has tried to make her bill as bipartisan as possible, by incorporating wholesale additions from Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican. The Senate could have rallied behind this bill, shown its dedication to the troops, and been done with it by now. But Democrats will have to pass this bill the hard, slow way, with repeated large votes overcoming Republican procedural objections. At this rate, it might pass on Wednesday. Or it might be killed by Republicans committed to making a bigger point about honor, valor, sacrifice and obstruction.

We know how that turned out!

The GOP are crying all the time, "where are the jobs Mr President" while at the same time voting down EVERY bill that would put people back to work... and you call HER scum?

Shame on you.

This bill would cost a measly $200 million a year! Is too much to help the guys who served get back to normality?
The Dems don't think so but obviously you and the GOP patriots think the same.
Geez, they even voted against additional HC for the first responders on 9/11!

The GOP are scum because they would rather let Americans suffer than help them, because they want to win an election.

Disgusting, isn't it?

Republicans spent like drunken sailors for eight years, redistributed wealth for eight years, created huge tax cuts favoring the wealthy, launched two wars, and didn't pay for any of it.

None of the right complained. Most of them simply denied what we on the left could see was coming at us from all of the spending, warring, cutting taxes, and removing regulations.

But just try to spend some money to insure good paying jobs for our Veterans, and THEN it has to be fully paid for!

Loophholes to advantage vulture capitalists however, don't have to pay for those.

Subsidies for the pollyuting industries? Don't have to pay for those.

Tax cuts for the wealthy?

Don't have to pay for those.

But for HUNGRY KIDS, sick Americans, for our RETURNING AND MORBIDLY INJURED VETERANS, FOR REBUILDING OUR DESTROYED JOB KILLING BUSH/REPIGLICAN BLANK CHECK SPENDING AND BORROWING FAILED ECONOMY, AND THE RESULTING JOB LOSSES, NOPE, THAT HAS TO BE PAID FOR!

PIGS!

So you logic is that since you think I never cared about Bush's spending why should I care about Obama's. Fair enough, even though it is a lie. However in stating that you must remember that while Bush was spending you were saying it was bad. So applying your logic spending must be equally bad for Obama. You aren't man enough to admit it. It is a shame I have to spell it out for you.

There was not a single post of outrage posted here by any of our attackers during the Bush Administration, ABOUT ANYTHING, INCLUDING HIS UNPRECEDENTED SPENDING AND BORROWING.

Additionally, Democrats never voted for Bush to invade and occupy Iraq.

Also, the majority of democrats voted against bUSH using force in Iraq.

AND I was among the first here, as were you, IIRC, to speak out against Bush's lies AND CHERRY PICKED INTELLIGENCE, WHICH HE USED to LIE us into the invasion of Iraq.

We were attacked and solandered by the right, and called terrorist lovers, at that time.

They all denied and defended evverything Bush did, from his spending, to his lying, to his incompetence and ignorance.

Now, we have even more proof that we were right, as more of the information from the 9/11 report, has been de-classfied, and far more about how Bush protected the Saudi's who financied the al Qaeda ceoll in New York, which financed the 9/11 attack.

w
We know far more now about how predetermined and organized his vast policy of ignoring all of the threats given to him by our intelligence people, were, and how much more specific, and numerous, the warnings were, all of them consistantly ignored, many more of them than we originally knew about, far, far more specific.

The general opinion among those who have studied these revelations, reveal a hidden agenda by the Neocons, AND Bush, to invade Iraq, to assuage Bush's grudge against Saddam, and to award n bid contracts to their corporate cronies, greatly redistrubuting wealth in this country, and removing regulations to enhance that re-distrubution.

NONE of those who post here were EVER outspoken about Bush's colossal, unprecendented spending and borrowing, nor about his unprecedented overreach of authority, lying, law breaking, and overall corruption.

They defended every single thing he did, and insulted those of us whose opinions at that time, differed from theirs.

Our opinions have since been confirmed, over and over again, and most recently by the newly released unclassified information from then 9/11 report, which reveal how many, and how specific the warnings of our intelligence people were, about the coming attack, and also reveal that Bush protected the Saudis by using National Security claims to prevent the all of the information in the report from being released.

That information proves that his cronies, the Saudis that his family, and Cheney and Rice's history, as well, wer in fact the financiers of the al Qaeda cell in New York, which also financed the attack on 9/11.

Obvviously this is why Bush and Cheney insisted on redacting all of that information from the 9/11 report, but much of it has now been released, through the Freedom Of Information Act, by organizations which sued for the right to know everything about it.

The more that is released, the more Bush's corruption and dishonesty, and that of his entire cabinet, top aides and agency heads, is revealed. THEY LET THE ATTACK HAPPEN FOR THEIR GOAL OF DISASTER CAPITALISM!

Not one Rightie on this forum wrote a single post of outrage throughout the entire Bush Administration's policies of spending, warring, lying, law breaking, nor about the proven, unprecedented failure to protect our troops.

NOT ONE SINGLE POST OF OUTRAGE FROM ANY ONE OF THEM!

We on the left, being somewhat in the know in advance, having read books, such as:

The Rise Of The Vulcans.and Mr. Manns previous books on foreign policy....and the failures and deceit of other underhanded Nixon Ford, Reagan/BushOne failed policies and cover ups....

House Of Bush-House Of Saud

Whats' The Matter With Kansas?

The Bush Crime Family just to name a few ouf of

all of the books on Watergate, Ford, Reagan, Bush One, and hence, we were naturally more inclined to research what we were being told.

We were right, the right on this forum was totally wrong, and remain wrong to this day in their efforts to re-write their own history on this forum, and the history of all of the Republican FAILED ECONOMIC POLICIES, which grew into a totally skewed government, and a threatened democracy, all of which were inherited by President Obama.

That's why both Romney, and Ryan are being booed everywhere they go!

Ryan was booed today, even though he took his Mom with him to speak with Sr. Citizens.

They were both booed yesterday.

Romney's only good event was when he got one of his contributing Corporate Coal CEO's to force his own employees to show up, and stand behind Romney and clap, or be fired, and then the CEO turns right around and docks their pay anyway, for not showing up for work!

The Miners called into a local readio station to report that fiasco!

Romney was booed for saying to another Sr. Group that he would repeal Obama Care.

They're going down like a lead baloon everywhere they go.

So tonight, Romney releases his 2011 tax returns, ON A FIRDAY, OF COURSE, and confirms that he is paying a lower rate, than the moochers he slanders and despises, the so called, Forty seven percent, which includes by a vast majority, working families, veterans, and retired citizens, living on fixed incomes!

And of course FOX News is a fountain of B.S. from which your kind loves to feed.

This is how the professional journalists at the Los Angeles Times reported the phone call between Obama and Libya's president:

"Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf had expressed his condolences earlier in the day. In his phone call with the new Libyan leader, Obama thanked him for his remarks and for his government's cooperation in the investigation into who killed the ambassador and the others."

"The president made it clear that we must work together to do whatever is necessary to identify the perpetrators of this attack and bring them to justice," the White House said in a separate statement."

And below is the take from the "fair and balanced" folks at Fox News. I'm done with the conceit that the extreme right is made up of misguided "patriots." Your kind doesn't give a damn about this country, you have NO sense of decency, and harbor a pathological propensity to willingly spew lie after lie, after lie, after lie.
