As South Africa and its neighbors struggle to provide public education and basic health care to their citizens, the South African government has 30 tons of ivory in storage, most of it taken from elephants that died from natural causes, Botha said. Selling that stockpile, he said, would bring in about $3.5 million.

Hi Nick,

I believe that ban had been lifted. With that stock piled poachers were killing the Elephants and making the problem even worse.

Any country can decide for itself, to sell ivory. In the U.S. any ivory that is already in the country can be sold & traded, but no ivory can be IMPORTED. There are 2 exceptions. Walrus ivory can be harvested by Eskamos & sold, but only in the state that it came from. Secondly if you go to africa & leagally shoot a trophy Elephant you can bring the whole tusks back into the U.S. This is called ESTATE IVORY & can only be sold, after your death by your estate. Whenever I buy Ivory it comes with a certificate showing what country it came from & when it was harvested...JER

Tw has put a positive spin on the subject to support his self-serving views. Like much of what is found on the net, take it with a grain of salt. They are his well written words. TW should be in politics of defending the tobacco companies. Given the opportunity, they would have you to believe cigarette were healthy. TW even had a slip up, when he used the term, "Tree hugger." It is hard for people to really be objective, they can convince themselves of anything if it is what they want to believe.
